I have recently re-started playing golf after a 8 year break from being a member at two clubs where i played at both as a junior.

I only played both clubs a few times and never enjoyed it due to my lack of enthusiasm for the game and never receved a handy cap.

About four months ago I was invited by my father for a game. I played ok and then the following week a played at a public corse. I quickly got the golfing bug.

i joined my fathers corse and put in three cards giving me a handy cap of 28. I also played in a couple of medals not even playing to my handycap of 28. I then Played a 9 hole tusday night knock about stableford comp and won. I then played the following tusday and came about middle of the board and then the following week i won again.

I then receved a e-mail informing me of complaints about my handy cap and had my handycap changed from 28 to 16 based on general play.

Can this be done?

28 sounds about right to mebased on your scores, certainly not 16. Although im not that clued up on the regulations of that kind of thing, I cant see how they can justify cutting you by 12 strokes.

24 points for 9 holes ?

That would equate to 6 nett birdies in nine holes.

And you then scored in this fashion on a second 9 hole comp ?

Although it seems like a massive cut, it would appear that your initial handicap was a bit tasty.

Are you still a junior ?

thats 24 points on stableford score when i was on 28 handycap. I was then moved to 16

Yes....exactly. Six under your h'cap over 9 holes. Impressive stuff.

I think 16 is a bit tough t.b.h. I'd have cut you with a "neutral" 9 hole score added to your 24 points. (Congu are approving of this, by the way)

24 points + a "neutral" 18 points is 42 points (6 under)

6 x 0.4 = 2.4

2.4 x 2 = 4.8

If I'd cut you, I'd have taken 4.8 off probably.

It's a very grey area....I think you should go a discuss it with someone.

It sounds to me that as you were so early on in your h'cap career, they loped off 12 shots for the 12 under par (nett) that you were.

:D

yippy another bandit gets cut :) ;)

I got 24 points for 9 holes last weekend, but only 10 on the back 9 :(

I'm guessing you didn't get cut though?

Our club doesn't cut on 9 holers. I wish they did, one chap has averaged 21 points 12 weeks running. In fairness to him (and his huge pot of voucher money) he does play the back 9 well and rarely wins overall over 18.

Yes I was cut based on 9 holes. I have never played a full 18 holes with a score under 100. As from today, after i questioned the huge cut i was moved to 19. Which I think i'll still stugle to play to in medals and comps(where it matters)

Why are you struggling when you can clearly play one nine pretty well. Is the other nine significantly harder or is it more a mental thing.

I think maybe you are trying too hard and thinking way too much about your score when you go out for eighteen particularly in competitions. You seem more relaxed about just doing the nine and obviously your golf improves as a result

I did it again yesterday, shot 23 on the first loop of 9 and then 15 on the back nine.. Played pretty well just felt the energy go over the last 3 holes, my plan is to eat more pre match and during the round.

Can't you just ask if you can tee off at the 16th???

Cutting you to that degree sounds harsh to me. When I was playing off 23 I shot 49 stableford points and was cut to 17 - 6 shots. I can't see any justification for cutting you 12 shots on the basis of a couple of 9 hole rounds.
Handicaps cover 18 holes. Most people play better on one 9 than the other and may have the odd day where they shoot a sublime score. I can regularly shoot 40 on the front 9 then collapse on the back 9....my handicap of 16 reflects this.
I would have a moan if I were you. You have handed in your general play cards and they have given you a 28 handicap. If you play consistently well then your handicap will come down in time, but I would say at the moment you are at a disadvantage.

this could be a mistake. it takes energy to process food, and despite the blurb, there are very few 'instant' energy foods - liquid is probably easier. you could try high-calorie liquid energy, taken frequently during the round.
Guinness would be my choice - at least you wouldn't worry about that back 9

I must admit, that does sound a tad harsh, and maybe the handicap sec has been got at by some of the more senior members at the club... ;)

Some will know, like Homer, that Bude is one of those courses, where you can really make a good score on the front nine, whereas the back nine is alot harder, so if I was to play the front nine in a couple of stableford comps at Bude I could, and have done on many occasions, amassed a decent total, but the back nine is a different matter, so overall, I generally even out to my handicap over 18 holes.

I played off 8 two years ago and played a society match against another society in a 4bbb and total points won each match.

My partner and myself on yellow tees managed a 56 pts which was a one off really and I played to 4 under par, I then got cut 2 shots by the club even though not playing off white tees and not in a comp.

So yes it can be done.
