Handicap manipulation - how to address

This thread will remain open now only on the understanding that those contributing to it do so in a manner showing courtesy and respect to others.

Any more trading of personal insults, however low level, will result in the thread being closed and the members responsible will have their behaviour addressed.

We’ve allowed considerable leeway here but even that hasn’t been good enough for some.

Enough is enough please.

Because we had no official handicaps that could be used in any comp except junior stuff.
We didn't get an official handicap until we were 18.
So I guess the point I was making was things have changed over the decades regarding junior handicaps which means
1. Thintowin isn't 17
2. He wasn't having a laugh at everyones expense
3. He wasn't lying
Wow! Steady tiger! I was replying to you, agreeing about the bit in bold, ie, That element hasn’t changed!

You didn’t quote any other part of my post.

1. What the hell has my reply to you got to do with Thintown.

2. Who said he was laughing at anyone’s expense?

3. Who said he’s lying?

Likewise, you don't convince anyone either, but nobody needs convincing. Dunesman has nailed the view from the clubhouse.

Clubhouse? You mean your own little closed circle.

You don't have to read all your drivel, just read what many, many subscribers are saying. That is not my experience with my club members and the same goes for many longtime posters with a great deal of experience.

I suggested to 3 jabber there may be a 3rd option in post no. 1,324
I went on to say this was many decades ago which Thintowin confirmed in post no. 1,327
You then asked me in post 1,336 what point I was making.
The point I was making was there was a 3rd option to 3 jabber's post that would mean his 2 suggestions were wrong

1. Young and.....lets be kind and say 'inexperienced' so his comments can be taken with a pinch of salt.

2. Telling porkies about his/her age and handicap and just trying to have a laugh at everyones expense.

I also know for a fact that Thintowin is certainly a few decades older than 17

I have no interest in Jabber’s post and your reply to him!

You only quoted part of my post!

I have absolutely no interest in Thintown’s age and confused why you keep mentioning it to me!🤷‍♂️

You said
Re the bit in bold:
Exactly what we do now.
I was suggesting that things may have been different 40 years ago compared to what you do now.

I mentioned it for general info for anyone reading.

You asked me
2. Who said he was laughing at anyone’s expense?

3. Who said he’s lying?
And I replied
Two likely scenarios here.

1. Young and.....lets be kind and say 'inexperienced' so his comments can be taken with a pinch of salt.

2. Telling porkies about his/her age and handicap and just trying to have a laugh at everyones expense.

Either way, not worth bothering about.
Can we move on now please?

I have mentioned this before. The change I would make would be to replace the current HI algorithm with the previous UHS one. Carry on with slope adjustment calculations etc but I think the current HI algorithm creates unnecessary volatility and is also easily abused.

I also went on to suggest that the old 0.1 increment and the size of the buffer zone could be adjusted to be category specific, as was the cut value, to make it fairer to higher handicaps if that's really the problem.
Thanks. I must have missed it.

Inquiry concluded. The extra £1.50 is our sub for the Lothian Golf Association.
I'm not sure just what our County & EG fees are currently but I get the impression that we pay more to the county authority and less to the national authority in England than you do in Scotland.

Yes you’re right. EG affiliation is £11.25, County ones vary (some throw in the County Card, some charge for it separately).
Yorkshire, I assume due to economies of scale as they have the most golfers, as I recall, are among the lowest.
Ours here are quite high at just over £16.

Not very different.

Just found ours.

England Golf {Male & Female} £11.25 {increased by £0.75}

Yorkshire Union of Golf Clubs {Male} £5.30 {increased by £1.05}

Yorkshire Ladies County Golf Association {Female} £7.00 {increased by £0.50} Under 18 Girls £2.00 {no change}

I suspect that our county fee has increased significantly due in part to the number of referees (and comp administrators) we now have out for the many county tournaments we have. In the last couple of years we have had umpteen qualifying at level 2 or 3. They get pretty good expenses and refreshments.

I meant that our County dues are just over £16, then we pay the EG £11.25 on top.

Just one thing, though. Why berate England Golf for a system it did not devise?
One thing we have all learned here I think is that WHS is a very misleading name. It is many systems with lots of adjustability in the hands of regional golf associations. EG is reponsible firstly for us joining WHS, flawed as ut is, secondly for not driving a better handicap system in the devising of WHS, and turdly, for not implementing a variant tuned to the needs of English golfers. The buck stops with them. They are the villains of this needlessly self-inflicted fiasco. But have their own mission and agenda which is not one set by the golf clubs of England.
