Hello all, I've been playing around 6 months and recently joined Aintree (think it's a muni?, should really know this I guess) so I played my first members comp yesterday and shot an uninspiring 106, normally its around the 100 mark but them white tees make it a long course! Anyway, I asked a playing partner if them kind of scores would make me an automatic 28 handicap, he said not, more likely 23/24. Is this correct? Left me a little confused....

Depends on the css of the course

Id say generally speaking to be under a 28 handicap you would be shooting under the 100 mark

so id put you at 28 at the moment

but stick some more cards in and see what happens

Good luck

For initial handicap purposes, all bad holes are rounded down to a double bogie.

Once you have a handicap, all bad holes are rounded down to a nett double bogie. So without looking at your card it's hard to tell, but it could well give you a mid 20's handicap.

A handicap is an indication of what your capable of playing to, not what you should be shooting every week.

As other have said it will depend on the make up of your card. If it was 18 hole on a par 70 course with nothing better than double bogey then you are probably looking at a 28 HC. The minute you have a couple of pars or bogeys then you are likely to be looking at mid 20's. My first handicap was 21 and I never broke 100 with any of the 3 cards but I did manage a few pars and birdies on my best card along with several triples or worse!

Always worth re-iterating to newbies (and everyone else). On your average day playing stableford expect 32pts - you got to play up to the best of your game to get 36 - too many folks are disappointed and feel they have done rubbish if they score 31-32 pts - and often will say - that it's odd as they thought they'd pretty pretty well. Well they probably had played 'pretty' well - just not 'very' well and so not well enough to score around 36-37pts.

Also worth re-iterating that depending on SSS, 36 points may not be playing to your handicap

Par 72 guess sss 70 your scores would put you in and around 24-28 depending on roundings go double bogey as already mentioned. Dont be to disheartened by an increase in your score playing in your first comp off whites its fairly normal. Youll soon adapt after a few comps.

Get the handicap cards in and let the handicap sec do his thing and see what it comes out at. Unless it seems silly low, or you really don't agree, get into club comps and start working on getting it down. As an aside, I'd perhaps have a think about course management off the whites and see if you can play them differently to keep the scores down
