Does anyone know a good page with all the details of the handicap calculation process? Particularly about the initial hc calculation.

Initial handicap calculation is easy.

Put 3 cards in, ignore the higher 2 (why have 3?), take the lowest card, reduce anything over a double bogey to a double, and add it up. Take that number, deduct the par for the course, and that is your handicap.

However, your handicap secretary will just give you a random number plucked out of thin air.

Thanks Murph. When I had my first hc calculated last spring I was allowed to reduce the score on 3 holes only. A friend of mine who his going to the process now has been told that he can reduce the score on 5 holes only. In fairness he is terrible and goes around over 120 each time so I guess they just don't want to give him one.

i would of thought you do the double bogey reduction first for each card and then drop the higher two cards.

Mostly correct

The best of the 3 cards after anything over a double bogey is reduced to a double bogey. (there is no limit to the number of holes this is reduced. The standard scratch score for the course (not the par) is then deducted from the gross after the double bogey reduction. For an adult male max 28

LOL, I'm sure thats how ours is done!

Just to add, the 3 (or more) cards system is the basis but committee can take other factors into account such as age, length of time playing, if a handicap has been held before etc. So, for example if you know that someone joining at age 30 played as a junior and got down to 6 and puts in 3 cards (+12, +14, +17) there is no way he's getting 12. More likely 8 or 9. Not always an exact science.
