As the title says, had a lesson today.

It is probably the best I have hit the ball for a long time. The grouping was much tighter, just need to take it to the course now, although the practice swings and actual swings didn't need too much thought and I seemed to be able to do it without too much thought which is always good. My bad shot was starting left of target line and going left. Hardly hit any of them today. Also many more shots were relatively straight ! If I can keep this going, myshort game, which was my nemesis, will benefit hugely as well. Already seeing higher and better struck pitches, with the hands finishing even lower.

It was also very enlightening, as we chatted quite a bit of the time, looking at videos and photos of various golfers and how they have changed their swings. The main one was Justin Rose. The first video I saw was three or so years ago. His hands finished very high and you could see him rolling his wrists to hit the ball. There was also a lot of daylight between his arms and his body.

The second video showed him with much more body rotation and the clubface coming through the ball square without the need to work the hands, his arms and hands also finished much lower at the end of the swing. He apparently talks about how he wants his hands being back and his body rotating through impact.

My pro was saying there tends to be more heading to this method, and the swing has changed in recent times. There is no longer the need to be so wristy or handsy with the swing, as long as the body keeps rotating the clubhead back to the ball, also leading to a " later" hit. As a boy he was coached this way by Bob Torrance and is the first to admit the change and that it seems to be for the better.

What are your thoughts ?

I would assume Bob is asking as it's harder to get a full judgement of improvents on everything including dispersion until you've worked through the bag especially with longer clubs

That looks pretty much like what I've been working on. Much less wrist, much more body, a much shorter feeling backswing and hands much further ahead at impact. It's pretty much revolutionised my swing through the bag.
The shorter backswing was especially enlightening. Got my 7 iron swing speed up to 90+mph and with a much lower ball flight. The occasional bad shot now is when I get a bit flippy at impact and pull the ball left.
Back to shooting in the 70's since working on this and very confident of getting back to 6 or lower next year 👍

Tony Finau is one elite player who has a shorter backswing. John Ram also. Both guys sending it.

And Denis Pugh was talking about his work with Molinari and that he isn’t teaching the coil, but more a controlled backswing and using the players strength to generate speed.

How you describe that is how I see it in my head lol. I had a bad habit of the hands being too active and the club head getting to the ball too early, so closing the face and if I was rotating properly it was big bit left.

That was my exact "bad" shot. 20 yards left of the green was a regular haunt. This has absolutely changed my game and it didn't take more than an hour to see big changes. It added a full club to my distances and felt much more repeatable under pressure.

Ended up playing in the sweep yesterday without even practicing since the lesson.
Some sweetly hit shots, and some others lol. Hit some decent drives, maybe slightly left if anything but not unplayable. The bad miss seemed to be pushes right with a bit of an open face, long irons weren’t too bad as well. Need to hit the range to work with the tweaks and see how that goes. Maybe try and video some of it as well.
The good ones certainly had a much straighter and slightly lower ball flight. Always good on the links
