Grand Prix going to Sky.... GUTTED!!!

The BBC is a fantastic instition which has lost its way in recent years. BBC3 and 4 are simply not needed, give us less new programming but of better quality, please. And we don't need a Gaelic language station for Scotland.

As for F1, it costs the Beeb approx 3million a race so 60million for the season. They do a good job too; I watched an F1 Gp when in America last month. Ad breaks every 8 (EIGHT) minutes and commentators whose sole contribution was to amaze at the speed of the pitstops.

I'm sad to see F1 go to Sky.

I talked to a very long time friend of mine this weekend, she works in marketing for Sky. She tells me that Sky are very aware that in "general" motor sport nuts are less into football and cricket and that they may well not do well our of "forcing" these people into buying a full Sky Sports package. She tells is that it may be that they will make a new motor sport channel and have the GPs on that. How that will be costed she could not muse and of course this is all pie in the sky(no pun intended)but show that it is a hot topic.

She was pretty sure that the Grand Prix will be packaged in a way not currently available though.

What I do find a little surprising is that they can decide things like this after getting the deal, I would have thought that Bernie would require all this information before making a deal.

The deal was finished at 6.45 on Friday morning and announced at 7.00.... go go go!

I am not convinced that anyone will notice the difference. The BBC has most of the races which are viewed in real time, and highlights of those races held at stupid o clock in the morning. Seems a fair compromise to me. BBC cannot afford to continue having exclusive rights, and so have concentrated on those races which get the highest viewing figures.

My view is that if the BBC could not afford all of it they should have taken non of it... who wants to watch half a grand prix season? Well let me change that.. I dont want to watch half a grand prix season.

As a side thing did anyone catch Martin Brundle`s little comment during quali? he was talking about two driver who he expects to lose there seats at the end of the year and said something like "driver x and y will be joining David and I on the dole queue next year" there was a moment of silence and then David Coulthard totally changed the subject. It made me chuckle.

So you actually get up in the middle of the night to watch the Australian, Japanese, and Brazilian GPs?

Na, I always used to though. I Sky+ them now and watch them when I get up. Highlights are no good to me, a Grand Prix is an event to me, I want to spend the 3 or 4 hours seeing all of it.

Wouldn't the Braxilian GP be in the early evening, rather than the middle of the night?

I get your point though, and thought the same about showing the races that people watch live in the middle of the day.

Well don't then.

What an odd comment, I wont be, ill be getting whatever Sky are offering, its the point of the post... are you trying to up your post count?

If the topic does not interest you, you don't have to comment on it.

Cant believe everyone is getting on there high horse about sky. BBC did NOT want full coverage as they could not afford it. Sky have pumped full money into it so the sport can continue to do well and not go short of money.

Sky have pumped a lot of money into cricket, golf and football over the recent years and it has seen a massive development in youngsters and inspiring them to.

At the end of the day if your not willing to pay for it then tough go with out and stop moaning about it or go find some illegal way to watch. I am sure strictly come dancing could do with the extra viewers.

An interesting and highly aggressive point you make there. Stop talking(moaning as you put it) about the Sky/BBC deal in the Sky/BBC thread, even though F1 has always been free to air since the 1st time it was televised till now, you your right, its a non topic...

God forbid we should talk things over on a forum??? :D

I think much better that we make one line comments or highly aggressive pro Sky comments when we have probably not even read the discussions made though out the thread.

Let me take a wild stab in the dark here.... you already pay for full sky sports so it actually is a non subject for you? If that is the case I think even that would have been a more constructive comment to make.

Edit: Oh my second guess would be that you dont watch F1 and have no interest in it at all?!

Am I close?

Yes I have sky at home, Yes I watch the Grand prix if im home when its on. Although whether I have it or not make no difference to my opinion on what I read on here. Yes I like skys coverage and I like what they have done for numerous other sports which seems to be ignored.

I just cant stand people making comments all the same of I aint paying murdoch, fine but we dont need to here it 10 times from everyone, a discussion yes thats what a forum is for discussing things not just Im not paying that idiot and having a go at sky for making a good business decision for themselves.

I believe formula 1 has been on sky before in 1992? how ever I do not know whether it was free to air or not.

Editted to add: What would people have said if Sky didnt purchase the full rights as bbc have already admitted they could not afford the full package and as no other broadcaster applied for the rights? Would they have then moaned at sky for not purchasing it and allowing there viewers to see the whole grand prix season?

Thanks, a lot more interesting post to read and I will agree that saying the same thing over and over without an explanation is kinda fruitless but inevitable when talking about any large media company, some will love, some will hate. I hate the company and love the product.

I dont think it was a two horse race although I can not be sure. BBC asked Bernie for a discount, he could have done so if he had wanted to, in the long run it may have been a better business decision. He did not want to seem weak on the matter as he is well within his rights to do and looked elce where.

Sky did not in any way save F1, even if BBC had totally reneged on the deal it would have not have created any problem for F1. Of course Bernie could have just insisted that BBC continue to pay and do the coverage.

What I am saying is this was not a pressure situation for F1 at all but it was for the BBC as they want to cap the license fee for some time to come.

The Sky deal looked very unlikely through out and I think Bernie would far rather have it on BBC but that not how its gone.

Anyways thanks for your comments, sorry if I was a little full on, it seemed as if you were saying it was a non subject where in fact you were saying something elce.

Lol what a stupid post. You are complaining about sky well don't get it then but if you don't get it don't complain as the BBC won't be showing all of the most boring motorsport going.

I can't believe you all bother - no one overtakes, no one crashes, no one goes off at the first corner any more so there is nothing to watch...it's the most pointless thing since vegetarian sausages....

Well done Chris, you wrote a post with more than 3 words in it!!! something very rare for you I have noticed. Once again, if your not don't like the content of a post keep out of it.

Since they made you a Mod you changed your avatar to something plain rude and all your posts are very short and very miserable. Sort it out, thats not the job.

Why you getting personal? does the avatar really bother you that much. who are you to tell me to keep out of a post it is a forum after all somewhere for different opinions to be voiced. At least my three word posts make sense. If you don't like it don't reply.

Oh and by the by that's only three questions if you would be so kind as to just respond to them please.

I am getting personal because you are a cock! I am not even going to explain why, your just a cock.
