Grand Prix going to Sky.... GUTTED!!!

The BBC's coverage is perfect. I don't see how Sky can improve it. The BBC have the great access to the teams and drivers and no ad breaks! I'm sure Sky will make it worse by having ad breaks during the race like ITV used to.
I'm reluctant to subsribe to Sky as I don't agree with paying so much each month and still having to watch ads breaks.

It is a standard feed, all the channels in the world have the same coverage.

My sister has just told me that there will be no adds, she is a nurd and does not usually say things like that if they are not so.

I doubt it. The F1 coverage is exactly the same around the world from the moment Jake Humphies says "It's time to hand you over to our commentary team of Martin Brundle and David Square face for the start of this year's [insert name] GP" and the screen goes to the black "F1" screen with the sound effects until the presentation of the trophies at the end.

It's F1's own "World Coverage" and is the same feed. So it will be exactly the same. Unless they do something to jazz it up before and after the race.


There's massive uproar over this and petitions you can sign online if you want to try and keep it with Auntie Beeb (don't know how much good it will do though )

On sky sports news this morning they said there would be no breaks. I will always watch sky coverage over other things and believe it is a good move, Sky sports news has been very keen on telling us stories involved within F1 this year so it was little surprise to see them have the coverage.

I would be very surprised if sky will just have the standard coverage, usually they arrange to have something extra involved whether they do put in there own cameras at certain points or have relationships with different teams to allow something different. example would be the masters when they got to show the par 3 contest the day before.

I cannot see sky saying what they have until the season is over if not people will be wanting it to happen this season.

I'm glad this cropped up. I was planning a rant about this just this afternoon.

The BBC spokesperson said it was good for BBC customers.

"BBC Sport director Barbara Slater said: "We are absolutely delighted that F1 will remain on the BBC.

"The sport has never been more popular with TV audiences at a 10-year high and the BBC has always stated its commitment to the big national sporting moments.

"With this new deal not only have we delivered significant savings but we have also ensured that through our live and extended highlights coverage all the action continues to be available to licence-fee payers." w.t.h.?

The sky person said it was "...fantastic news for F1 fans and Sky Sports will be the only place to follow every race live and in HD."

Fantastic news for F1 fans? I despair.

The way I see it is this;

Sky want to get as many of the top sporting events to "force" people to sign up to their packages.

Every time they pick up another "jewel" their executive management team will be rubbing their hands in glee, most probably kissing their own backsides in narcissistic pleasure.

Kids aren't taking up golf? No surprise, those that don't have sky can't watch it and those that do have 12 million channels of dung to watch and frazzle their brains on stupid teenage vampire series and musical dramas full of homo-eroticism.
Kids aren't taking up cricket....same story.

If sky want to offer jewel events P-P-V, I might go for it. Otherwise, I'm standing firm.

At least the Beeb will save millions and not send the 177 staff it took to the British Grand prix. I think its a sad day for the sport, for the BBC and speeds up the inevitability of all the top sporting events ending up on Sky. How long will Wimbledon, the Open, Ascot, and even the boat race last even if they are supposedly protected

I cannot understand some of these 'it must be on terestrial TV' arguments. The fact that we can see so much live sport is due to Sky. The BBC cannot dedicate anywhere near enough of its schedule to ensure decent sport coverage. For everyone of us who want more sport on the BBC there are a dozen complaining because their favourite program is delayed or postponed. Based on that, is it then fair that the BBC get the top events cheap. Sky can bankroll cricket but cannot show home Ashes tests, they can bankroll rugby but cannot show the 6 Nations, you get my point. As for football, you want the best players, league etc but also want to see it on a channel that cannot pay for it. F1 is even worse, if you cannot pay then you do not get a grand prix let alone coverage.

Competition is no better, if you want to spread the coverage rights then fans just pay more.

Simple fact is, if you want to see sport and want sport to remain well funded then, like it or not, you have to pay for Sky.

The only reason I have to pay the TAX (sorry the license fee) is 'cos HID wants a box in the corner providing constant moving colour pictures with the occasional programme of interest. If it wasn't for that, I wouldn't have a TV in the house.

It's quite sad that people feel that they are being held to ransom by Sky. Like sheep though, they will bleat for a while but still follow each other. Sky is like a self fulfilling prophesy.

Me? If there is something on that I particularly want to watch, if it's not on terrestrial or freeview then I'll find it on the net. Failing that, watch it later or not bother.
