Weddings

Thanks. we considered that but Lady Doon thought me with a hire car on strange roads was probably not a wise move.
[plus our passports are out of date]
Can you still hire a car at 77 years old ?
Doon, you don't need a passport on an internal flight. We fly Newcastle to Bristol quite often and they potentially could ask for ID, eg driving licence, but we have never even been asked for that. Might be past that point on this occasion but worth knowing for future.

Loganair fly from Edinburgh to Exeter so might be an option.
Exeter Airport is some way out from Exeter., although I would expect some sort of bus service
Can any lovely West Country folks tell me the easiest OAP route to travel between Southhampton Docks and Exeter.
Years since I have been down there and it looks like three routes with similar travel times.
Very much depends on the day of the week always busy Friday/Saturday

If you are driving the A35 between Dorchester and Exeter can be a bit of a pain. Sometimes there is argument for going through Salisbury , pick up the A303 then A30
Train goes Salisbury, change, Salisbury to Exeter.

As per Clive why Southampton.
If not Exeter why not Bristol.

Thank you (y) We may park up at Salisbury then train to Exeter followed by taxi to Mary Tavy.
Two and a half hour train journey though, that was a surprise.

As an aside..we don’t aim to support or gift equally to our children. They have different life pressures and needs and we provide financial support (and bail out) accordingly. They have understood this since they left school and went to uni and know that we have remained, and will continue to remain, good to our word. They both understand that they are in a fortunate position with us and are grateful for that and that there will be no debate about who gets what from us and why.

We have recently provided financial support to our daughter for the deposit on buying a house. This purchase happened sooner than she expected and she hadn’t been able to save enough, so the money we were going to give her towards her wedding (now on the back-burner) has gone to her deposit. It is her choice. She knows that as a result the Bank of MaD may not be open or as forthcoming when wedding time comes around.

Our son, who will not get married (so he says), has had very different financial needs over the last 15yrs. We have no record of how we have supported him financially. Our daughter knows this and knew what we were doing with him and has no grumbles - she at times wasn’t happy at how he was living his life but understood why were were doing it.

They are both equally grateful for the support we provide. For us that’s how it should be and gratitude is all that we ask of them in return.

I looked at National Express coaches that was 6.5 hours

I have done the drive Southampton to Dorchester many a time in back in the 80s/early nineties it was a lengthy journey back then some times.
I did Exeter to Dorchester just once and reckoned I would never do it again. Single carriageway road with lots of hills and bends ok once it joins up with A303 going in the other direction. In terms of roads in the South we are very much much the 'do not care about it' zone in the South West despite masses of holiday traffic. The area authorities have tried again and again to get the A303/A30 upgraded to dual carriageway all the way to Exeter.
