I've suffered with the unmentionables a few times during my short golfing career and the last time I had them I used to say to myself and others, "I would take playing terrible with a host of bad shots as long as they weren't s****s".

Well, whereas I still agree with that thought/hope, let me tell you that it's still not pleasant at all as I'm doing exactly that.
The unmentionables aren't occurring, which is the only positive, but of the other bad shots - you name it and I'm doing it.
Struggling big time at the moment and confidence is low once again.

It is some game we play and love. I'm finding out there's a lot more lows than highs.. for me anyway!

Dunno if it's just me, but is one bad/mishit shot any better than another one? If I was hitting shanks all of one round, I wouldn't be that happy if I was pinging everything off the toe in the next round, or thinning everything. A mishit is a mishit.

Even works the other way a little bit. I used to push-slice all my drives really badly. Thankfully that is not the case anymore (at least not often, the occasional one still goes right on me). Still, even if I hit a decent drive now which ends up on the fairway, I might be annoyed at myself because it faded a bit. Because a) it wasn't the shot shape I was trying to hit and b) I am always afraid the slice will get back in when I do that.

Some bad shots are much less destructive than others. As Ben Hogan used to say, if you are going to miss it then miss it straight.

Yeah I get that, but I also reckon treating it like some sort of voodoo where you won't even say it out loud is putting it on a pedestal and surely just making it even harder to get past?

They are truly awful. It shoots off at at ungodly rate at an awful angle.

Terrible feeling. Good friend had to sack the club team this year as he has it bad atm.

I thought this was going to be me on Saturday.

The previous weekend I went to the par 3 and lost 4 balls due to shanks, walked off after my 1st 9!

For me shanks come from not turning in my backswing but doing everything else "right", in other words I do all the moves minus the body turn. The real give away as at the top of my backswing the club comes out of my hand and I feel like I have to regrip at the top. This is due to my left arm being stretched and unable to turn anymore. With a good body turn I dont feel that and I strike the ball well.

My drill to fix is the old butt of the club on the belt buckle and turn keeping the club 90* to the waist. If I do that then "push up" with the handle at the top I get in a really good position to hit down on the ball.

My pro is putting me in these positions and it worked, once I got going I came back in 39 (with a double on the 10th) on Saturday, round a proper 19 holer, not the par3!

How do you feel at the top? Stretched or comfy?

Shanks are the worst out there no doubt about it.

I suffered all last year with toe hits. The contact was horrendous but all I lost was distance, managed to have the best season since I took the game up.....you couldn't do that if you were shanking it.

Played like a turnip on Saturday (21 points) but given what has been going on I'm happy. The daft thing was I thought on a different day that could have been 28 or more. Some bad bounces, some crap shots too and some self inflicted damage trying to have fun and take on the glory shots. I am actually hitting it better in the last few weeks (certainly since I stuck the last live lesson on youtube) and despite a meagre return feel happier about my game. I had a dose of the socket rockets recently and so like the OP can cope with the odd top, slice or hook for now.

I'm with you on this. This whole 'refusal to name it' thing is pathetic. It's only a shank.

Played with a guy last Friday and he must have shanked it at least 15 times. Full shots, chip shots and even managed to make his driver go straight left on one hole with one off the heel.

It was a nightmare to watch. God knows how he stuck it out for the full 18 holes.

For me, I find that a shank seems to come out of nowhere and more than any other fault, really undermines my confidence, which then makes me tentative on subsequent iron shots.

On Wednesday I hit a number shanks mid round and then continued to play my irons poorly and with low confidence. Finished with 82 nett, handicap up another 0.1

I played a pairs match on Friday and didn't hit a bad iron shot in the whole round, hit 6 or 7 greens in regulation. Played with good confidence level and we won comfortably.
