Golf Things That Gladden The Heart

I almost made a post on this subject yesterday - I was looking at Jamies score history over the last couple of years - he's been having lessons about every 6 weeks since we came back from Spain, and joined a club last September that has free range balls and great practice facilities - he's going up shortly and will be there all day working on different aspects of his game.

While he hasn't had a period of playing out of his skin this year, he's eradicated the wild scores and now views anything over 80 as disappointing - hopefully he can post a couple of low scores in the closing stages of the season to get back into the 4 point somethings on his handicap index.View attachment 59190
Your lad’s chart illustrates what I tell mates who are struggling to get their handicap down and are getting very frustrated - we have quite wild fluctuations in our scoring until our ‘core’ game becomes more stable at whatever level of competency we are at; the amount of fluctuation then starts reducing and soon afterwards our handicap will start to reduce towards the next level of competency; we then experience relatively significant fluctuations around that level - until our core game has stabilised for that level and so on. The transitions can be very frustrating.

In respect of overall game competency levels I generally talk of getting from say 25 to about 18; then 13; then 9…after which the steps become closer together and harder to achieve.

ETA…I could play to a 10 handicap, but with quite large fluctuations before I started on lessons 3yrs ago to change my swing path I’d played for near 40 yrs. Practice and more lessons have seen my Core Game stabilise and that’s what’s enabled me to get my HI down. My Core Game…steady and straight, though not long, off the tee. Good short game. Focus on getting more consistent on what I’m good at; become a bit more competent at what I’m not.

So I've just gone and looked back on my last 50 scores - I had a spell where I was having lessons alongside Jamie - and there's a significant dip in my scores which led to a handicap reduction - I stopped having lessons myself due to cost and time and my index has crept back up to what it was prior.

It's something I need to re-address I think.

I am very fortunate in that I now have the time, and as far as cost…well my future son-in-law knows which side his bread is buttered on…😉👍

Thing is…looking at my 20…early march lesson…mid-march to end April four out of five rounds are in my eight. May to end July…none in my eight and scoring all over the place and poor, so lesson end July. From start August, four out of five in my eight.

I have played at 103 distinct golf clubs (more courses than that as some clubs have more than one course). Four of them have 'south' in the name, but only one 'north'. one 'west' and zero 'east'. There is no point to this post. You're welcome. 😗
Does that include clubs with the word in the name or just ones that begin with the word?

For example would you count Southampton golf club or just South Hampton golf club?

And what about if it was East Southampton golf club, is that 2?

There is less point to my post 😂

It includes the string 'south' even if it appears as part of a larger text string, so Southampton and South Hampton would both count (as would Hampton South, although that sounds more like a tube station).
I've never played at East Southampton, or any other club with more than one compass point in its name. If I were to do so, I would count the club twice (or more than twice if necessary, e.g. if I play at Southwest Northampton).

You mentioned 4 points ..................... of the compass. 🤪

What about places that have 2 courses called the West & East course. Does that count 😂

This has been messing with my head all day 😵‍💫. I'm racking my brains to think of my equivalent. I've definitely done North and West, probably have not done East, I must have done South, but can not think of one. Good teaser.

Just tidy up the game a touch and play at East Lake next year?

Think I can find all four points of the compass that I have played in Scotland
North Berwick
East Renfrewshire
Southerness
West Kilbride.

I’m guessing it’s rare for one club to have two quite different names with both names having a different compass point in them…I give you Royal North Devon aka Westward Ho! 👍

And I believe that there are embryonic plans to reopen Eastwood GC, closed but just a hop skip and a jump south of East Ren.

Just thinking about this North Berwick golf club the course is known as West Links.
To confuse things further, it's situated in East Lothian.
