Your lad’s chart illustrates what I tell mates who are struggling to get their handicap down and are getting very frustrated - we have quite wild fluctuations in our scoring until our ‘core’ game becomes more stable at whatever level of competency we are at; the amount of fluctuation then starts reducing and soon afterwards our handicap will start to reduce towards the next level of competency; we then experience relatively significant fluctuations around that level - until our core game has stabilised for that level and so on. The transitions can be very frustrating.I almost made a post on this subject yesterday - I was looking at Jamies score history over the last couple of years - he's been having lessons about every 6 weeks since we came back from Spain, and joined a club last September that has free range balls and great practice facilities - he's going up shortly and will be there all day working on different aspects of his game.
While he hasn't had a period of playing out of his skin this year, he's eradicated the wild scores and now views anything over 80 as disappointing - hopefully he can post a couple of low scores in the closing stages of the season to get back into the 4 point somethings on his handicap index.View attachment 59190
In respect of overall game competency levels I generally talk of getting from say 25 to about 18; then 13; then 9…after which the steps become closer together and harder to achieve.
ETA…I could play to a 10 handicap, but with quite large fluctuations before I started on lessons 3yrs ago to change my swing path I’d played for near 40 yrs. Practice and more lessons have seen my Core Game stabilise and that’s what’s enabled me to get my HI down. My Core Game…steady and straight, though not long, off the tee. Good short game. Focus on getting more consistent on what I’m good at; become a bit more competent at what I’m not.
