Golf Random Irritations

So, this is my major golfing irritation actually.

I used to play most winter stablefords under the old handicap system, as they were often non-qualifiers or “cuts only” - which I believe was standard.

These days, our winter stablefords are qualifying competitions, so I don’t bother. I’m not at all interested in having my handicap for the summer months dictated by winter golf. My last qualifying round was 4th October.

The winter stablefords have often been impacted by the weather, there’s temps or trolley restrictions, and they get turned into a non-qualifier. Therefore the field is full of people who wanted to post qualifiers so they’re upset, and all the people who didn’t want to play are sat at home and they’re upset they didn’t enter.

I feel like I lose out on playing golf as a result of this compared to the old ways. I also feel like the above results in essentially no one being satisfied? Surely this is not ideal for anyone, and is there not a better suggestion for winter comps, like people having a choice over whether they want it to qualify or not?

Many years ago they bought in variable/competition standard scratch which was supposed to take care of playing conditions and clubs were asked not to have non qualifiers particularly where the decision is made in advance. They now have playing conditions calculations (PCC) which in theory should do the same.

We run qualifiers all year round with the only reason for them not being so is too many temp greens.

Our Saturday competition is always a roll up stableford - all year round. You book a tee time on the booking system, then if you want to play in the comp you just sign in on the computer. If you don't want in the comp, then you can just go out and play - even with other people that are entered in the comp.

Same with us over winter, book a time and enter in the shop if you want to enter the competition.

We used to have some comps which were like this throughout summer on Sundays from 1pm, but that’s not how our summer “board comps” work - they are obviously mandatory entrance into the comp.

I play so much 4bbb social golf and winter league 4bbb golf that i actually haven’t played my own ball with a scorecard in hand for almost 5 months. That’s why I’d like to play the Stablefords (as non-qualifiers) - and that’s what I miss the most. Even just 2-3 rounds would be great to get back into the swing of it before my annual nett 80 in the April medal 😂

We used to have lots of Leylandii trees on the course and had a programme to remove them all.
A couple of seniors did not like the fact we were felling mature trees and contacted the forestry commission about, the commission came up to investigate, liked what we proposed so much they gave us a grant to do it.
I wish they would remove ours. They are coming down slowly but unfortunately I’ll probably be long gone before they are.

My complete lack of ability to resist playing this godforsaken game.

I've been really struggling with my game for the last few weeks, not scoring above 27 points in what feels like forever.

The course is pretty muddy and really could have done with a week or two off itself. I can only imagine it's going to be in a right state come the summer.

However, I'm absolutely sick of range balls so what have I done? I have nothing else to do at the weekend so I've booked into the Saturday and Sunday comps  Because maybe this week will be different, right? 😭
35 points today, much better. Came second on countback, that's the irritation. But what a relief to be able to hit a ball again
