Golf Random Irritations

Absolutely…in posting I was as much wondering if what I see is pretty normal across golf clubs the country over. Saturday medals are normally busier…maybe it’s just a Sunday Medal thing (we hold them at least two weeks apart).
It would be interesting to see what the correlation is. Maybe worth asking to club to send something out or put it together yourself and ask the club to send it that way you’re doing the leg work for them.

I currently not a member due to my work commitments but I’ve always preferred a Sunday medal purely from the fact it’s what my dad did so when we were low enough as juniors to play men’s comps we would just go along on Sundays as he was playing anyway and it’s just stuck as habit. But I think the status quo has changed and many like Sunday to be a complete rest day Before going back into work. People’s lives are busier now so it could we be it’s as simple as that but always good to get answers.

Hardly the same though. The lower handicap golfer has a greater ability/chance to redeem their score as they know they can make birdies and pars.
Well maybe…sticking down a couple of DBs on your card when you only have SF shots does make things rather difficult (from someone who knows…).

Anyway…my post was simply on my observation that only 2% of those playing tomorrow were 20+ PH 🤷‍♂️

That said…we do have a lot of very handy in the mid-high teens PH…👍

Just generally playing like a prat compared to recent rounds. And when your two teammates also have off days on the same day. Ho hum, golf innit

Played in the Vets Championship today and played quite well, that is until the 9th where I hit an absolutely stunning drive. It is a par 5 with a blind uphill drive, the line is just to the right of the marker post, which is where I hit my arrow straight drive, which finished .......................somewhere!!

I walked over the hill and nothing was there. Like a lot of courses, the rough is practically none existent. We marched up and down to no avail, no ball. It upset my equilibrium. It's ok I'll get over it in a few days.

Incidentally, I played with the eventual winner, 45 points off a 26 handicap. The joy of the double bubble, 8 of them. He played well.

I’m not sure it sits right with me that the comp winner from today can have one of his 8 best scores from 833 days ago
Is it because they’re not entering cards or comps to maintain handicap or are they returning after a long lay off. I’ve just returned myself and have never played a comp under WHS, my handicap (7) was allocated by England golf based on my last scores under the old system so I technically still have rounds from over 2200 days ago counting toward my HI. Would that also irk you if I say turned in 40 pts and won.

I’m not being pedantic just pointing out there could be a very valid reason for such large gap.

I'm contemplating stopping playing comps until the rain comes....the course is just too fiery and the winner will be the one who gets the fewest bad bounces...
Played a comp yesterday and the number of bad bounces, massive extra run and poor lies just didn't make it enjoyable..
I was actually hitting the ball fairly well but the handicap was gone by the 5th hole...I just couldn't control the ball.
A drive that was pretty straight and pitched more or less in the middle of the fairway kicked 60+ degrees and ended up 40 yards from the middle,of the fairway and in so e deep rough....I had to lay up in front of bunkers that were 200 yards away...I took my 170 yard club.. good job I hit a draw as the ball finished 20 yards past them...
Playing partner hit a drive in a par 3, it pitched pin high on the fringe, kicked on and was never wpseen again as it shot into the jungle beyond the next tee that is 20 + yards from the green...
Think I'll save my money and balls for when things get a little fairer.

High handicappers are far more likely to have huge blow-up holes, meaning they don't really have much chance of winning medals.
If they want to put in a card to try and get their handicap down, may as well just do a general play one and save themselves the competition entry fee.
Nail on the head , I think.
Also, I think that there is an element of embarrassment here. Those north of twenty are quite likely to really big blow ups. Hamlet moments etc.
Being able to pick up for a blob can save that awful time when all are waiting for you to possibly get out of the bunker, or find your direction to the green.

“ I will have a go maybe in the Seniors medal, midweek, but on a Sunday, the day the clubs best golfers play etc, - no, I’ll try to get better at a quieter time”
Seems an understandable thinking to me😀

It’s always struck me as curious how some single figure guys seem to find it hard to understand this.

He won our doubles knockout competition last year

Fair play to him for winning, out of interest does the club have anything in place to make sure people are entering a required number of rounds each year!

As I said I’ve been out the game for a while so coming back under WHS is something I’m still getting used to but I know at my previous club there was a requirement for x number of competitive strokeplay rounds to be submitted a year to ensure of correct handicapping.

I feel the same way. Hit a 6 iron over 220 yards on Thursday.
