absolutely agree. Our 1st is a short par 4 so what happens is instead of waiting for the tee time people think well their on the green lets drive......

Hate when that happens. We have 8 minute tee times and you're on the first green and you look back at the tee to when the group behind should be teeing off only to see all 4 of them striding down the fairway. You know you are in for one of those hands on the hips day every time you look back.

I purposely wait on the first tee until our tee time arrives. It avoids frustrating waits on the 2nd and/or 3rd tee.

It was the same where I played, it was then a par 3 2nd and if you didn't wait you just backed up on the next hole, the members all waited until their time, even if the hole was clear.

Our 1st is a long uphill p4, unwritten rule is that you don’t hit until the group infront is at the approach bunker which is about 440 uphill and even then shortest hitter first. By the time we’ve played our 3rd (p3) there’s generally a 3/4-complete hole gap per group and the pace of play become very quick as ready golf works.
Our 4 ball roll up often get around in 3.5hrs and it doesn’t feel rushed, I’m convinced it’s due to correct gapping between groups.

It's been shown previously that reduced gapping between groups increases the length of the round.

Yep, but do we know of anyone that has invoked this in a club competition ? (Breach of rule 5.3a)
Similarly has anyone penalised a player, or been penalised, under rule 7.3 for not marking their ball when identifying it ?
Suspect these are 2 of the most commonly breached rules of golf.

When going out for a few holes by myself of a mid-late afternoon I’ll try and find a tee time that has one or maybe two empty times behind…just let’s me mess around and try things. I’ll usually check maybe five-ten minutes before I go out that the empty time or times behind me are still empty. If they are great and off I go, if they are not then I’ll look to move my tee time if I can.
So the irritation? When I check and behind is still clear, but sometimes as early as me approaching me ball for my 2nd shot on the 1st I see one or more players ready to tee off - I check and yes they have usually (but not always) booked the tee time after I checked.

Just curious. Would that also depend on the comp committee giving the starter the authorisation to amend tee times ( I dunno if its there by default)

Sometimes people do not show for their tee time or cancel. This can lead to the starter (pro shop) swapping people into different groups - therefore times. I think the starter has authority to do this, would be silly not to be so.

I would assume any sensible Competition Committee would delegate this authority to the starter as an official of the club.

What is this starter thing? Only seen it at 2 clubs before (Cumberwell and St Pierre) and played quite a few round the Bristol/Wiltshire area.

The person who tells you when you can tee off. At most clubs, it is the pro shop. At other (fancier) courses it is a dedicated person who greets you, gives you a card and tells when you can tee off.

We had an issue a couple years back when the old golf director ( pro ) at the time decided he would act as Marshall and starter , he was rushing around getting people to the tee early and then deciding to get them off early ( as soon as it was clear ) without any understanding that it would cause hold ups as soon as people hit the 2nd and 3rd
