Golf Random Irritations

Remind me of something that is frustrating us at our club at the moment... now it's non-qualifying comps that I've played recently so it doesn't make a huge amount of odds, BUT...

We are currently playing off our blue winter tees, which are rated easier, because they make the course shorter, which is fine in theory. However, the ratings don't take into account the fact that the course plays much longer, longer than the distance made up by moving the tees! So everyone loses ~3 shots and the course, if anything, is playing more difficult. Then, when you look at where some of the blue tees were at the weekend, they're where the yellows would have been anyway! So they're not particularly helping the tee boxes recover, and they're taking shots off everyone. The whole thing is just a bit wonky. The blue tee ratings would be absolutely fine in the summer, but that's not really when they're for (in the case of comps).

If they were qualifying comps and the majority are playing worse than handicap this would be taken care of by the PCC (Playing Conditions Calculation) not uncommon to see this come in during winter where I play.

PCC is inadequate in my opinion. I seldom see it move even in very challenging weather conditions.

My club hasn't affiliated to Howdidido so I can't register for an account.
I can enter opens at other clubs via the Howdidido website but can't get the benefits of being logged in, like checking that my name is actually on the start sheet.
Irritating, unless anyone knows a workaround.

An irritation I used to dislike as well.
It is the number of clubs that think that just because they are on Howdid. that others must be. What used to irritate me was clubs that only published Open results on there.

Looking at the latest County Golf mega sale clothing items and saw this written under one of the items:
"US SIZING - YOU MAY NEED TO GO DOWN A SIZE"
..it's a pair of shorts. The sizing is in inches. Are inches different in America somehow??

Americans like loose, baggy gear so that could be part of it (think the Adam Sandler look 😄) . I also wouldn't mind betting that they are a little less than exacting on the inches to flatter the larger sized American physique (was that polite enough?)

It just doesn't make any sense though. Totally accept that a 'medium' means different things in America (more like a large), Europe and East Asia (more like a small) but 34" should always be 34 inches! That's what it means! If they're making it slightly bigger then it's a 35" or a 36"!

I don't disagree, I also agree that it is irritating. It's trying to appease people, tricking their minds.

I’m sure that endless market data proves that those of a heftier frame are more likely to order clothes from suppliers that supply correctly to their mental image of their own size rather than the physical reality of that size. Commercial necessity then dictates sizing.

Also as diplomatic as I could phrase it 🤣.

Drives me mental, this, and not just with golf gear. I've had 30" waist jeans that are baggy and 30" waist jeans be uncomfortably tight. Must be those metric inches

Yup, same here. Especially annoying for me since my true size is 33 I believe, but hardly anyone makes odd numbers. So I have to go 34 - some fit nicely while others are massive and need a belt.

Found out this morning that we're losing the subsidies we get through a club membership scheme and means costs for golf (and practice) are going up 😒

Just think yourself lucky that you are in the market for 30" waist anything.

Now where do I find those svelte American clothes?

I think it's where they cut the cloth. They measure and then cut on the line ok, outside the line baggy, inside the line tight. I've got jeans from Matalan that say they are 34 Inch. Not a chance. I'm 36 inch all day long. I'm still waiting for a discussion on waist size to occour when in the pub when I've got them on. Easy money...... ;)
