Golf Random Irritations

Every year the OEMs seem to claim their new driver gives 10 yards extra distance. If your current driver is 5 years old, you just need to buy the last 5 drivers and replace with a newer model and you've got 50 yards extra distance*.

*You can't short cut the process by simply buying the newest driver, you need to follow the yard 10 increment per model.

It's 8 years old....I'll never financially recover from this.

Went on a simulator on Saturday, (new one in Cannock, enjoyed it, if anyone is local), I just can't seem to drive the ball further than 210 yards. Really frustrating seeing the numbers, I knew I wasn't a big hitter but that seems really short. I know distance drops off as you get older but I'm 41 🤣

Maybe I need to drop the loft from 12° 🤔

Followed a 2-ball out yesterday and very obvious they were beginners (we all started there though) but for goodness sake pick the appropriate tees to use
Where's the fun in reloading off each tee and being well out of range for even the shortest par 3

Understood frustration. But who is there to give them guidance and advice?

Yeah of course newbies do need a steer
Supposed to be the pro shop and/or starter that take care of that

Course gets many thousands of tourists every year so its a daily occurrence to get players that are 'strangers' to the course and not unusual to need to give them orientation etc

Last week, our pairs better ball league was:

-Navy tees (whites)
-But the navy tees were supposedly where the silver tees (yellows) were
-so we were handicapped off the yellows
-But in actual fact, most of the navy tees were in normal position
-qualifier

This week;
-Navy tees
-Will supposedly be where the silver tees are
-handicapped off silvers
-non-qualifier?

I don’t get this…
Surely if we’re being handicapped off silvers, you’d just play off the silver tees. Why mess about with sometimes/maybe/partially moving the whites up…
And if EG/WHS allows for cards to be entered in better ball (42 pts, 9 scores on the card)… The club should also be allowing this?

It seems it’s a non qualifier as they don’t want people putting out if they can’t improve upon partners scoring Ie. To improve pace of play.

Am I right in saying the “correct” approach should be:
-Tees should be in the right spot, as per ratings and slopes etc.

-Handicaps should be based upon the tees you actually use

-whites should never be “moved up to the yellows”

-It should be a qualifier

?

It should only be a qualifier if every tee marker is no more or less than 10 yards from the fixed marking point for that tee set and the whole course length is no more than 100 yards longer or shorter than the measured course. The handicaps should be based on the tee set that fits these parameters.

Remind me of something that is frustrating us at our club at the moment... now it's non-qualifying comps that I've played recently so it doesn't make a huge amount of odds, BUT...

We are currently playing off our blue winter tees, which are rated easier, because they make the course shorter, which is fine in theory. However, the ratings don't take into account the fact that the course plays much longer, longer than the distance made up by moving the tees! So everyone loses ~3 shots and the course, if anything, is playing more difficult. Then, when you look at where some of the blue tees were at the weekend, they're where the yellows would have been anyway! So they're not particularly helping the tee boxes recover, and they're taking shots off everyone. The whole thing is just a bit wonky. The blue tee ratings would be absolutely fine in the summer, but that's not really when they're for (in the case of comps).

Absolutely no urge to play in the morning. Forecast is cold and wet. Trouble is signed up for a team thingie, so obliged to show up.

Hoping it really pours so it's closed!🤣🤣🤣
Beyond no urge here. 0 degrees and raining? at 8am.......uh.....no. Killed off Mondays tee time as well. The guys I play with only play 9 holes when it's cold so I'm staying home.

Newport is open, not sure how. Been raining all night, cold and raining this morning. Agreed with group to not bother, all stayed home. No dissenters.

I pulled out yesterday as the Met Office forecast was 2 deg and rain all day. That’s not how it’s turned out - it’s dry and overcast with light wind.
