Golf Random Irritations

Our GK takes the view that 'Protection makes a better course'.
Our very erudite DGK publishes a weekly newsletter explaining what they have done, what they are planning to do next week (and in the future) and most importantly WHY (ie the agronomical and playability significance).

Weekly newsletter? We get updates only when the complaints from members regarding the lack of updates become too loud to ignore any longer!

I have argued times with the club manager that he would not get the volume of correspondence he does about course conditions at times if he was to take steps to keep the membership informed.

If the course is gonna close i'll get a phone call from them to tell me it's shut (assuming i have a tee booked) along with everyone else that's booked a time
But I live pretty close so I'll know if it's not gonna open

Out of interest LT is there any reason they’re not addressing those problem areas if they are so well known to everyone.
Money would be my guess!
It’s incredibly expensive to drain land.
Pretty much what @clubchamp98 said, it's largely money. Some of the areas need drainage putting in, some need the existing drainage repairing. Both of those require money we likely don't have. We know this as members so there is no major complaining about it. A mild grumble, but not major 😄

I do think there are things they could do but don't on a smaller scale which is frustrating. For example, some of the walks between holes get very wet and muddy. We have lots of blown over trees, we have a chipper. Have one meet the other, cover the walkways that are a real problem. They have done it on some sections, do it on others. The ones they have done it on work really effectively so they have seen it work.

We are lucky in that for a parkland course it actually drains pretty well. It was built in the mid 90's so a good amount of drainage went in at that time. It just hasn't been maintained as it needs to be, they haven't added more in areas not covered originally but now requiring it.

Our club has just started a weekly newsletter, great step forward I think. Covers news on the course, the club house, the pro shop and competition winners etc.

Do they give you greenkeeping news every week even in mid summer?
Surely this must often be incredibly repetitive especially at peak growing season. “We intend to mow/iron greens to the same height as last week, also the surrounds, fairways and first cut. We will be raking bunkers, devoting tees etc. this is also what we did last week” rinse repeat for a few months.
I fully understand and wholeheartedly support keeping members fully appraised of project progress and plans, unusual events, recent weather effects, mitigations taken etc. but every week seems a lot.

Should have played a fourball betterball comp with the Mrs today at the home club. The pair we were playing with had a individual no show. Other guys comes out for two holes and walks back in. Mrs and I now play the rest of the round as a casual round. Go back to the clubhouse advise them what has happened and the fact we had nobody to mark our card. Instead of just WD on the IG results we are down as a DQ - Mrs isn't too happy as it looks a tad dodgy to have the DQ next to our name for something we have no control over.

We used to do a weekly newsletter but after a while you run out of stuff to say so we have gone to more a monthly one
Monthly is plenty. We had one for a short period but then they stopped. A shame as has been previously mentioned, it stops a lot of the grumbles because people have been kept informed. It's what most people want, information. Not complicated, huge chunks. Just the basics that most members want to know.

It does drop off when there is nothing particular to report but there has been a lot of activity this year. New buggy path started, much work refurbishing bunkers, tree clearance etc.
But normal work is not dwelt on. Although taking the greens down 1 mm lower than we have ever had before was explained.

We were closed yesterday, the decision was made on Friday with an email ‘we’ll decide if we’re open on Sunday at first light Sunday morning’. Played today, you wouldn’t have known we’d had so much rain on Friday, and so I feel that either they got it wrong with the early call, or just decided that they’d give the course a break on Saturday. I’m ok with either tbh.

A club near me revamped its monthly newsletter a couple of years ago when I was a member there. They asked for suggestions for the name and I won some pro-shop credit as mine was selected. I just used ChatGPT to create golf puns.

Over the summer the club has worked with a course architect to develop plans for realigning much of our 2nd hole and building a new green, bunkers, mounds etc.. The plans also involve us losing our large short game practice area - but a new 'World Class' one will be constructed on the part of the 2nd hole that will become redundant. The plans are controversial (to say the least) - with many voices raised in opposition; but many other voices in support.

About a month ago the club ran a special (information) meeting to explain all aspects of design, financing and timescales - and to address all the feedback that has been provided on the plans through the extensive consultation process the club has run this summer.

The meeting was very well attended - though it was noticeable that many of the more vocal in opposition to the plans were not present. The introduction and presentations by President, Chair of the Board, Finance Director and Course Architect were superb and highly informative. Some questions were raised by opponents of the plan and, IMO, fully answered - whether the questioners were satisfied is up to them...but the mood of the meeting seemed generally very supportive of the plans.

And so we are proceeding with the changes starting April - with much work planned over this Winter to address some of the issues and concerns about the course raised in the consultation feedback and deemed essential by some and needing to be prioritized over the new development.

All good and positive - moving forward with exciting developments? You might have thought so - but still I sit and listen to the same people repeating the same complaints and moans It's rather tiresome tbh.

Indeed at times I struggle to contain my irritation with the moaning given the meeting and that 'their' view might not be the view that they think is held by the majority of the membership. TBH - surveys and feedback indicate that positive expressions of opposition are in a quite significant minority - yet 'they' seem to consider that 'fake news' - or 'fiddled interpretations' of the feedback The actual truth seems to be that the huge majority of members are either supportive, neutral, or aren't bothered about what the club does.

Come on peeps - let's quit the moaning. We've all had our chance to air our views; the Board have done everything they need to do in their consultations and duty of care to the membership - we elect them to make decisions on our behalf - let's now leave it at that.

Very well written and I’m intrigued by the changes that are being planned as am hoping to get over to your course in the new year as it’s really not far from me.

I think you’ll always find people in opposition and complaining that their opinion is being discounted as irrelevant simply because they cannot accept change and like to hold the “I told you so card in their pocket” just in case things take a little longer to bed in. Sadly you can’t please these people it’s their way because it’s easier to be negative and bitter than it is to accept change and look forward.

If you hear them again that think you wait and see how good it looks and then you’ll hear them change their tune to “I always knew it would work out “

Are you sure you are on about your club or are you subliminally talking about this forum?😀

I think the changes will give us one of the best par 4s in the area...and there are many excellent courses in the area. I consider it as giving us a huge improvement over our 2nd as it is - which, though difficult (it's a 470yd par 4 with drive to a rising fairway and blind second shot through a dog-leg.), is a bit bland and out of character with the rest of the course. The realigned hole will be just as long but will play even longer...it will still have a dog-leg but the 2nd shot will be to a green in full sight.

We'll also have a superb Short Game Academy/Practice Area that will complement our excellent full (driving) range facility. The work will be done in two phases of a month each - one next year and the 2nd in 2027 - with absolutely no disruption to playing being envisaged.

We have this year revamped our clubhouse ground floor, entrance, reception and shop - and it is splendid. Yet many were moaning before the work - and of them many if not most are saying 'wow! It's great - much better than I had envisaged! QED.
