Golf Random Irritations

Whilst I respect your right to look a plonker whilst wearing a cap, I dispute the "more comfortable" argument. The shape and structure of the part of the cap that is in contact with your head is the same, regardless of whether it is worn properly or back to front. Therefore the comfort element is unchanged. The only possible explanation is that you may be distracted by the peak when wearing the cap properly, but this is nothing to do with comfort.
You can choose to disagree and think I look stupid but you cannot tell me what I find more comfortable 😉

Has nothing to do with a cap distracting me to be fair, it literally comes down to protecting the back of my neck and partly down to when wearing one for some jobs I do at work there’s a reason I got into turning it round to do a certain task and it stuck and forever more felt comfortable to me regardless of hat structure plus the peak is more rigid and provides great sun blocking protection to my neck on hot days where the sun beating down on the back causes me issues 😁

Untucked shirts.
Played behind a fourball last night, all maybe mid 20’s/30, I wouldn’t even say new to the game as all looked to hit a decent ball, electric trolleys, tour bags etc. Just really struck me as these new sort of youtubey type of golfer, shirts all untucked, hats backwards, maybe a bit unfair or a bit of a generalisation there as I do watch a lot of the new YT/media golf stuff, quite like hoodies, joggers, getting away from the old expectations dress wise and getting more young ones into the game. But my god just tuck your shirt in and put your hat round the right way. Looks horrendous.
You never struck me as this sort of person before now! Shame.

Just read the pretty short dress code for home club and we’re supposed to be shirt tucked in. I often have it tucked in but not unusual if I wear it untucked too (depends on the design of the shirt)
I guarantee when I play tomorrow I’ll see it breached plenty of times and there’ll be no enforcement. If I ask there’s some of the staff & many players who won’t have read it & no one will go up to a player to request they tuck it in.
That doesn’t mean there’s any kind of player anarchy though. Despite someone writing the dress code it’s just not a day-to-day thing. I suppose it exists in case its needed for someone going way over the mark i.e beachwear & flip flops on the course

It always makes me chuckle with the shirt in/out debate.
Proper first world problems.

I think it also shows how outdated some golf dress codes are.

You can wear an old 1984 yellow from too many washes polo shirt with last Sundays gravy stains on but make sure you tuck it in.

Wear a brand new just bought £100 polo in the latest style and leave a tail hanging out and it’s the gallows for you boy.

No idea why a lot of non golfers think it’s a game for old posh public schoolboy types.

Players who roll a 2ft putt 1ft past the hole, then go on a 10 yard circular walk whilst verbally lamenting their putting ability before tapping in the 1 footer.....and then complain that the front 9 has taken 2 and a half hours to play.

I believe that most club dress codes are historical and have simply not been updated. Staff use common sense and ignore the outdated ones, open to interpretation of course. There will be some clubs who stick rigidly to them, I've played at a couple, but most will only intervene in extreme circumstances.

As an example, I change into a pair of blue textile trainers after playing and go into club bars wearing these. I'm pretty sure that the wearing of trainers in the bar will be on the naughty list of most clubs but I'm up to 15 away clubs this year and not one has cared. Why do I wear them? Bloomin comfy, perfect after a round.

90% of clubs still have it in their dress code, because the dress codes haven't been updated in 50 years, but most places wouldn't enforce it - I'd even suggest the staff would feel silly enforcing it if they're under 70. Vast majority of the polos I own are designed to only sit an inch longer than your waistband anyway, so they probably wouldn't even stay tucked in if I tried. There is one Peter Millar polo I own that is a couple of inches longer, so that is the only one I do tuck in because it looks wrong otherwise.

I just checked my club's latest dress code, which was updated in 2024, and they have actually removed any mention of needing your shirt tucked in (as well as any sock-related rules). It does however still say you can't change your shoes in the car park, so baby steps.

Home clubs’ not even reached its 8th birthday yet so I’m fairly certain the dress code (while very brief/modern) was lifted from elsewhere, just so they have one
There will definitely be shirts worn out, there will definitely be flip flops in clubhouse and definitely caps worn indoors... and nobody will say anything

Resort course with lots of tourists on top of members etc so that may have a bit to do with the approach

It’s the ones who think they’re pro’s trying to use aim point inside of 5 feet and trying to feel the slopes with their feet for me.

Jamie Donaldson one of the pre eminent teachers of it even said absolutely no point trying to use aim point and slope % from 6 foot and in because you can’t feel it enough and isn’t enough reason to use it from that distance. Just pick a line and commit to pace.

But I’ve seen so many out on course recently doing it and it just slows everything down and prevents ready golf!

Long range putts go for it as long as it’s while I’m playing but short putts get on with it

Americans have different shaped heads to other countries so caps fit them differently
I'm American.....I can't stand normal golf caps. WAY too stiff in the front where the forehead is, really find it uncomfortable. Haven't tried it on the back of my head....the skin on my face is in bad enough shape without leaving it exposed to the sun. I try to find caps that are more flexible at the front...like running caps.
