Golf near Whitby

So, a long wait, but our 4 day trip begins on Monday.
We play Whitby and Scarborough North & South Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday.
Think the most we are paying is £50, so great value.
I’ll post how we get on.
Hcp indexes are 5.3 to 40.4. We’re playing for fun so gimmies inside a putter length. Two 3 balls, so we should get to the pub in good time.

And if that’s the order you’re playing them, what a treat.

I’ve stayed over in both when I’ve had guys working there. Er, interesting nights out - good luck!

If you’re staying in Whitby itself, it’s a great night out. Not rough. Lots of pubs and some of the best fish and chips in the country.

All 3 courses you’re playing are decent. Whitby is the perhaps the least best. The holes over the road aren’t as good as the original ones.

Just to note, when I last played Whitby in April a bridge that you have to traverse both on the front and back 9 had been condemned. Means there is quite a walk up a steep hill. No big deal but only mention it in case it would be a factor for any of your party.

So, just off Whitby. Not hugely enjoyable as the wind was horrendous.

Thought the course layout was a bit strange. A few nice holes but a lot of poor ones. Hidden ditches all over the place that just seem positioned to catch balls rather than water.

Greens OK, but hole cup fitment not deep enough. I bounced off one that was level with the surface of the green. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Tees were very poor, pretty much no grass on most of them.

Hoping the Scarborough courses are better.

Edit…. Course rating a mile off for this course.

Crazy long walks as the bridge is out of action.

Nice clubhouse and friendly staff and good food.

I reckon the very dry weather will have hit them hard. I suspect they don't have a lot of cash.

The last holes at North Cliff are very uninteresting, just a few trees on a big field. O/w a nice course. But South Cliff edges it for me

If playing Scarborough south
There's a bit of a mad walk from 3rd green to cross a road and walk past houses on the other side to find the next hole
It's not signed at all either

Enjoy the rest of your trip

That's a shame about Whitby , it's always looked an appealing course when I've passed it, one to cross off the list if I go back down.

I've never played Whitby, but have played both Scarborough courses and Flamborough Head a few times. I agree with the comment about the clifftop holes at North Cliff, pretty dull. The holes across the road are much more interesting. South Cliff is the better of the two, particularly the holes nearer the sea. I prefer Filey to either. Flamborough Head is definitely worth a visit, it's 5 miles out in the North Sea, it has it's own micro climate.

Snainton Golf is worth a drive out from Scarborough if you want to kill a couple of hours. The shop is good as you would expect, decent range and a fun little pitch and putt course.

Yes Filey's lovely. We've booked again for next week liked it that much.

South Cliff was enjoyable too. Front 9 better than the back 9. The walk across is a bit strange but didn't really bother us. As you walk over the bridge and into the houses keep the church to your right and walk towards the sea.

Never mind the golf; we’re all on tenterhooks to see if you survive and what bovver there is on your rough night out in Scarbados or **itby… 😆😆

I remember playing Scarborough South Cliff a few years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. The Pro is a renowned Elvis impersonator, and a really nice fella.

Last game was yesterday at South Cliff. A very interesting course. All 18 holes were different and all good, couldn’t pick a poor hole.

The course was miles better in terms of condition than the other two, greens were excellent.

This was also the cheapest course of the three, only £35 which is incredible value for the quality of the course in a popular seaside town.

Only downside was that it took just over four and a half hours as we were behind a large group of men (maybe 20) who were all dressed in yellow shorts or trousers - very strange. We didn’t use the clubhouse as we had to get back to Whitby for dinner. Excellent pizza in Pizza West then a couple of beers in the Royal Hotel bar.

So, we had an excellent break down here. Heading home in a bit.IMG_2241.jpeg
