Six of us are heading to Whitby next July.

Are there any recommendations for golf within a half hour driving radius?

Courses need to be reasonable value (say < £75) and preferably not too difficult.

Links and inland courses would be good.

Thanks for any advice.

Either of the Scarborough courses (South is linksish and my preference), Hunley Hotel is worth a shout (29 holes) depending which holes you play or Saltburn. But Whitby itself is a nice track.

Check their websites.

Bit further to drive... but.... if it was me...
Ganton 50 mins south. Cleveland 40 mins north. Get twilight rate at Ganton and both courses together then fall in the price bracket you want. You get your one inland and one links. And two of the very best courses in the NE for me.

Not sure what's the 'best of the rest', but not of the standard of the two above.

Enjoy whatever. If you want to play Seaton Carew on the way down I might be able to host... depends on dates. (y)

Visited the area a lot but never played golf there as it's been with non golfing friends.
Scarborough South and Whitby both have great situations on top of coastal cliffs, would like to play them though I don't know about the actual courses.

Top tips but I'm not sure they fit into the 'not too difficult ' category 😄.

Malton and Norton is 47 minutes away (according to Google maps)

27 holes, superb greens and not too difficult.
My home course and I'm biased but it's brilliant...

Never played Whitby but it’s meant to be decent, if a bit quirky.

Both Scarborough courses would fit the bill, good courses, good value, not massively difficult. Filey would also suit you.

Kirbymoorside. £40 this year. The hardest part is the trek up from the car park to the clubhouse. Starts with an interesting short Par 3, has a par 4 which is so tight you think you are driving down a drainpipe. The rest of the course is a good 40 quids worth.

As above, Malton and Norton. Even though we have a reciprocal with it, I haven't got round to playing it, but I have heard nothing but good about it.

It’s quiet a few years ago that I played it, Whitby itself is ok, some newer holes across the road that have replaced ones that have fallen into the sea due to costal erosion are not as good as the remaining older ones at the time I played it I got a great deal via Golf Now.

If you’re travelling that far, a visit to Ganton is a must. If you have the odd occasional golfer, or high handicapper, it will chew them up a bit. S’boro North Cliff is decent but South Cliff is better.

Whitby is a good choice as it won’t chew anyone up. A few back and forth holes but there’s room, just a bit samey.

Hunley Hall is up on the cliff top and breezy.

Saltburn has a couple of blind holes and a couple that run close together. I’d happily go there.

Cleveland - I’m biased. I was a member there for a lot of years. There’s been a number of changes that’s only enhanced it further - it’s held the Yorkshire Amateur a good number of times… it’s that good.

Scarborough North has a boring finish but the other 15 holes are good, Filey is good, Malton is good and while I haven’t played Whitby for many a year, I recollect it being interesting.

@KenL Ganton is possibly my favourite inland course in Britain - certainly worth the drive!
Cleveland I also enjoyed but I preferred Seaton Carew — both are decent, as others have said

Others have mentioned Ganton and Cleveland. I would have put them top of the list but they are outside your driving time limit. Both are cracking courses but may fail your 'not too difficult' test. And Ganton may fail the price test.

Played Kirbymoorside when Jamie was there playing a Yorkshire inter district match. Pro charged me £20 and I slotted on the back of the lads playing their foursomes matches.
First few holes seemed a little bland and I was concerned I’d be a little underwhelmed by it, but it actually builds into a cracking course with some very inviting layouts.

Yep.... prices are getting crazy. That's why I'd tagged them (Ganton/Cleveland) together. Twilight at Ganton - and always offers at Cleveland - put it in the right ball park (albeit at the top end).
