Last summer I drove south from Edinburgh on the A702, to pick up the M74. It was a great drive and would like to know what courses to play and places to stay you'd recommend on this route. I am heading to Prestwick in June, so could do this on way or way back.

From a similar thread last year (although more easterly focused) I picked up playing West Linton and Peebles. Any others further west. Is Biggar a good base for a couple of days?

Thoughts appreciated....

Lanark is well worth playing, Powfoot has a great reputation but I haven't played it.
Closer to Prestwick Belleisle in Ayr is meant to be very good.

Most borders towns are pleasant though I've only ever driven through Biggar. Can't particularly recommend places to stay.

@IanM , I'm not good on the west side of the Borders area but I have stayed at the caravan site by Powfoot GC (as recommended above) and walked across the course many times. It's very links, lots of gorse, pretty flat (just bumps). The remarkable thing is that no matter the time of year, the course is always pristine, immaculate. You don't want to be wild off the tee there but otherwise, it looks a very good course to play.

I got the impression that IanM isnt going as far south as the Solway Firth - so Powfoot probably not on the cards.

Lanark's a good shout. But otherwise dont know the A702 area well enough. But would say that the South Ayrshire golf pass is a good buy. Can get on Belleisle, and the three Troon municipal's for a hundred quid - and all are excellent courses.
