Well I had too try and keep it topical! (see title).

Only because Top Gear slate so many cars for being 'to golf club'.

What car do you really want and what's the reality!

Start off.

TVR Sagaris

Mazda MX5

TVR being the dream car, (not necessarily obvious from the two choices!).

Can I have an Ariel Atom with the Honda v-tec and bolt on blower please?

If I could afford the fuel, I guess an M5.

To be honest, unless a quattro version of the octavia vrs came out, im happy punting round in my VRS as the boot is cavernous and holds all I need to car myself and 3 others if need be anywhere in the country.

Probably a top spec. Lincoln Navigator, a Chevy Tahoe or a Caddy Escalade (although it's a bit 'boyz in da hood'-innit)

If I'm forced at any point to part with my current steed I would like something like an old A6 , A8 or if I win the gee gees - a Q8. There's something about big Audi's.

Auto of course.

Mercedes-Benz CLS600 (brabus spec)
Chrysler 300C
Mercedes Benz CLS320CDI
Audi A8 V10 Tdi

These are sensible dream cars.

Achiveable cars I would like (C-Class is a little small for my liking) would be.

Mercedes-Benz E320 Avantgarde
Jaguar S-Type 4.0 Sport
Jaguar XJ6 4.0 Executive/Sovereign (LWB Model)
Audi A8 4.2 Quattro
Mercedes-Benz S280

Unfortunately these are all gas-guzzlers so if I was being totally sensible it will be a Mercedes-Benz E320 Diesel Avantgarde or over-spec elegance.

If the boot is any smaller than my own leon cupra its not great for getting a few sets of clubs into without having to remove the drivers from the bags.

eaglehunter, avoid the old 3-series B-M-Trouble-You like you would a nasty std. They drive crap, drink fuel, break down and are very spartan.

For the same money as a 1/2 decent P-Plated 318i you could get a Y-Plate, new shape Mondeo with good mileage.

The Ford drives better than the beemer, the 1.8 does 42mpg, they qualify for low road tax, they are bomb-proof and even the basic LX model is loaded with A/C, CD player, electric pack and the other nice bits.

I sat in an MX5 the other day, 1/2 hour lift to get my car. Ow! these things are small. Cattle class airlines have more room. 1/2 hour was way more time than was comfortable, I was getting cramp.

I would go big, currently an E300 td estate, but would like an AMG E class estate instead (if I could afford the car, the gas and the insurance).

My Toyota has never given me one moment of bother so, do they still makes the truck that Top Gear couldn't kill?

That'll be the Hi-Lux pick -up (red I believe).

The Landcruiser I have have is based on the same tractor-like chassis.

The only problem with swapping to a saloon or hatchback for me would be the clubs. Having had the privilage to effectively lift the clubs off a waist height shelf i might struggle to scoop them out of a low boot. The back's not what it was and stooping is strictly verboten.

The Toyotas are very reliable but even on the VX trim it has that slightly plasticy feel.

This is all very pertinant at the moment as I think i'm about to get hammered by the chancellor again for owning a 4x4 that was made in 2000. How very un-forward thinking of me

You are right about the plasticky feel Bill. My dads VX is a lovely car but it does lack that quality finish.

To be honest thats why I am a Mercedes & Jag fan, they do know how to build a lovely car finish wise. Better than a Beemer or Lexus by a distance.

Don't laugh but one of the best finished cars around in my eyes is a high-spec Rover 75. If it wasn't for the reliability issues and the fact that they have a poor power/weight ratio I would own one as they are so cheap.

The best built car I ever had was a Mercedes-Benz SEL500 saloon. It was a 5.0V8 auto, limo spec in grey metallic with red leather and thick pile carpets. Every extra that existed at the time was fitted to this baby. It was 10 years old when I bought it, new it was £71k, I paid £1500 for it. Thats what I call depreciation. I didn't keep it long as the 8mpg economy was crippling the wallet.

Is the trade off not reliability MWJ? A plastic clad car that never lets one down is more useful that a comfortable armchair on the hard shoulder?

I have no experience of top class german motors to date. Can they match the reliability of a Japanese vehicle?

I take your word as gospel on this John.

Toyota reliability is the stuff of legends.

I also find that Mercedes, Audi & VW (skoda & seat inc) are bombproof.

As for BMW, not a fan of their reliability and quality although the later models 02- seem to be heaps better.

I know how you feel about the Chancellor, billy. The one that stuffed me is not a million miles away. ******** raised the tax on diesel one month after I bought one.

This may offend or horrify but I bought a Fiat Tempra TD, not a vestal either. When I passed it on it had 186000 on the clock, donkey still in good nick, **not a speck of rust**, but some godawful knocks and bangs that we just couldn't trace, at times I thought a wheel was coming off.
Worst part about owning a Fiat was their spares set up - everything was 'it'll be in Tuesday' or 'it has to come from Italy'.
