Golf clothing

I consider a dress code to be a pretty important part of golf. Why do people consider it different from other sports? There is a 'dress code' in football, rugby and other team games so you can tell the 2 sides apart. There is a code in swimming and athletic events too - often governed by the clothing's affect on performance in the event.

Golf is in that mix too, by ensuring you are warm enough but not sweating and that you can swing your club unimpeded you get more from the game.

As for the side issue from that made by the OP - I consider spelling and grammar to be pretty important too. I accept that some of us may not be as good at spelling as others - I sucked at English when I was at school because the rules of our language are so inconsistent. That said, when a post requires careful reading and concentration to understand what was being posted in the first place - well that's going to put me off posting much more than any spelling nit picking.

Well said, Dreamer2

As long as I can see the meaning of your post, I have no problem. If, however, it becomes too much like hard work, I switch off.

Keep it coming.

Yes, codes do evolve, but fashion is also cyclical. Some of your fashion was around 15, 20 or even 30 years ago. This does not necessarily mean I would want to wear some of it now anymore than I did then.

More to the point, dress codes are not repressive - if you read them correctly. Most will stipulate, in one way or another, that clothing 'should have been designed/intended for golf'. As many with whom I have played will attest, that can be stretched beyond any bounds that the originators of the ruling ever considered.

With the examples of John Daly, Ian Poulter, et al before us, why would you want or need jeans?

Well said Dreamer. Must admit though I don't give a dam how someone spells as long as I know what they mean. But punctuation is anouther thing. It helps if this is right as the comma in the right place says what you mean. No comma or in the wrong place and it can, say something else. Just one of the problems of the written word over the spoken word, Always so much easier face to face. This is not ago at anyone just a general comment

As I said good on you Dreamer. Sounds like you came out on the right side of a bad time. My respects to you.

I for the life of me can't see the attraction of playing golf in jeans if I'm honest, I find them uncomfortable when swinging a golf club not to mention the water that gathers at the hems when on the grass

I have no problem with golf wear. Most of the stuff these days is actually very comfortable so I can't really understand why people feel changing to jeans will help?

If people play footy/rugby/tennis etc then they have to get the right(ish) gear for training and playing, can't see why golf would be any different

Well said. I get fed up with people who criticise peoples spelling. When I read a thread it is because it interests me. I am not interested in people playing the school teacher with their red marker. Anyway Stevie.....your spelling maybe be good shame about your use of English grammar.....;)

As a 15 year old I have to say I completely disagree with this. Whilst I think some people I know would be put off by dressing in the correct way for a golf course even they would admit its nothing like being at school. I have to wear a shirt, tie and blazer to school everyday and when I'm playing golf I'm wearing a polo, jumper and smart chinos, with white golf shoes, all of it is a lot more comfortable than school uniform and to be honest you can pick up some pretty nice stuff (calvin klein golf etc) that I would be perfectly happy to wear when I'm out with friends, I think whilst golf should move with the times a dress code has been part of the etiquette of golf for years and in my opinion should not be changed.

Very well put sir, if you are the future of golf I suspect we will be OK

Chinos are not smart, they are a throwback to deck shoe wearing numpties of the 90's or middle aged men who for some even stranger reason believe that they look smart with a blazer!

Oooooh!!

Craw for Chief Constable of the fashion police.

I do have some weird and whacky golf clothing but also have some very sensible outfits. TO be honest I am not embarrassed to wear them away from the course I have gone shopping straight from golf before and even gone to meet people in my local dressed in my golf clothing. But then again I do not play in chinos and deck shoes. Does it look weird to go out in a pair of black straight leg trousers with a white polo and black shoes on?

I can't see why you would want to play in jeans and a t-shirt.

There's just something I like about pulling on a freshly pressed polo and a pair of "golf" trousers, that's golf. I don't think I could imagine watching the golf on TV with Rory, Luke and Poults strutting round in a t-shirt and a naff pair of jeans and then whacking on a hoodie when it gets colder..

I agree. I was always told by my dad that if I looked smart I'd play smart. I'm sure there is an element of truth in this and never felt right playing footie with dirty boots or turning up in whites with last weeks grass stains still on them (I kept wicket so a degree of diving around required before anyone asks). Similarly I like to feel smart when I stand on the first tee. It gets me in the right frame of mind and all is good - until I take the club back. No wait that was the 2011 Homer - until I take the club back and whack one down the middle and onto our first green. Glove back in smart trousers, make sure the neatly pressed shirt is tucked in and a quick tug on the sleeve of my pristine club jumper. Shoes nice and polished and off to make the birdie putt.

As for the side issue, I think I have a decent level or written English (having edited the GM Forum pages and had several articles published in the mag and website) but I just want to get my points across as quickly as I can on here. Its usually in the evening when I'm on, I want to enjoy the posts that have been made since I last logged on, add my views and move on and watch TV etc. I make spelling mistakes and type too quickly and usually transpose words. Who cares. It is readable and makes sense (ok the comments may not appeal but that a different kettle of fish) and as long as it isn't text speak I couldn't give a hoot if anyone on here posts with errors or it isn't grammatically correct

Can I still wear my cardi with the pockets?:)
Why not, I played earlier this year with someone who was wearing a geometric George sweater, a la the Faldo range of the eighties. :D

My opinion is that jeans and collarless tee shirts should not be allowed and dress should always be smart casual. To use our dining room you must have a jacket and collar and tie on, that is a bit much and I am sure that this puts people off using it. However the club stands by this and wants to attract the correct type of member.
Personally I feel how a person presents themselves says a lot about them, although a book cannot always be judged by its cover !!

I admire you for your honest post. Keep your current self belief and work hard for your family and I hope you get the break in life people like you deserve.

Jeans are a no no on the course but I do not mind them in the club house. As for t shirts rather than a polo shirt I have to disagree also.

Too many fashionable polo's about not to wear one.

As for chinos. I wouldn't clean the dip stick with them.
