Golf Cart Ignorance

im going to put myself in the firing line here.

for what its worth i hate buggies, AS A RULE, you will have two players in a buggy, and rarely does it happen that both players hit their ball in the same area. this then slows up speed of play as you have to wait for player one to play before the buggy is reloaded up with both players, off to the ball of the other player an so on. its even worse this time of year where courses restrict the accessible areas that buggys can go to.

we have some old boys at our club who simply wouldnt be able to play without the use of one, and for that i support the use of buggys, but when you have able bodies people using them through nothing more than because they are lazy fookers, then i have to go against it.

Lets be honest, as a sport its not the most physically demanding. If anything the walk between shots is the only excercise alot of people have. Me personally i enjoy the walk between shots, its when i mark cards, clean clubs or more importantly clear my head from the last bad shot, or focus on the shot coming up.

What I dont really understand is these guys are playing to have fun with there mates, why have some of you lost sight in the game was designed for some fun. We are not professionals it isnt life or death so whats wrong if someone wants to pay the extra and have a buggy. If I could afford to I would as I enjoy the game sitting down watching others play there shots as well, I can sit down have a nice relaxing period between shots, have a bit to eat and drink. Dont lose sight of the fact that you all started playing because you enjoyed the game when you first played it. Why do some people insist on moaning at people who dont play often, if they dont join up when other members leave your course will soon become a housing estate. Complain about your own game fine, dont moan about others its really pathetic at times how some people like to act like they are better than others because they carry or dont use a chipper or refuse to use a belly putter.

I think that standards have gone down the drain since birching was banned ... good god, I saw a chap on my local course the other day who wasn't even wearing plus two's! Not to mention those awful people who change their shoes in the car park! (give me strength .....)

the clubs around my area all use the 90 degree rule were you drive up the right or left side of the fairway to a point adjacent to your ball and walk to your ball play your shot and walk back to the buggy, your not allowed to go on the fairway to me this is logical, and to be honest what is the point of the bloody things unless your elderly or unable to walk any distance if your a fittish person why would you wish to use them and for all those who are going to post about feeling tired or the course is hilly i have two things to say get fitter or loose weight golf is an athletic sport and should be treated as such.

Ha ha great way to spread golf to the masses.

It's a forum, people like to exercise their right to have a moan. You're moaning about people having a moan.....

I don't have a problem with buggies, preferably I think when the course is busy it should be for the old guys/gals and for anyone who has a reason i.e. disability or injury that stops them from being able to walk for an entire round. When the course is empty then the able bodied, fit as a fiddle late teens early twenties brigade can use them providing they don't drive them erratically or across greens which is something I witnessed from the group of blokes I mentioned in my earlier post.

For me a big part of the enjoyment of golf is the walking.

However, I manage an annual game with my mum at her club. This has now become, I think, the only time she makes it round 18 holes and she's taken to hiring the buggy for the occasion. As a once in a while thing, using a buggy is actually fun; hit your shots zip up to the ball and repeat.

I can honestly say we shoot round in a fraction of the time we'd take without the buggy so don't understand how it can slow things down.....

On the money. im all for people with disabilities using them if it keeps them in the sport longer, but when its a case of just being to lazy or its too knackering.... it says alot about your livestyle.

Im by no means the fittest person on here, but im more than capable of carrying a bag for 18 holes. working in an officed based environment its one of my only sources of excercise and is treated as such.

If your bag is too heavy its normally case of carrying too much crap in your bag in the first place. ive seen 80year olds still go out and walk a course with a push/pull trolley, and i dont see any reason not to if your ability allows.

Maybe we should make everyone have to drag a sack of rocks around as well? I play golf to relax, I'm a very fit person and if I want to get the heart rate up I'll work out or play football etc. If I fancy a change of pace and just want hit a few balls and occasionally use a buggy who are you to tell me I shouldn't? Those who carry moan about the trolley users. Trolley users moan about the buggy users and buggy users moan about all miserable buggers who moan about people not playing the game how they want them to. If it bothers people that much they should petition the club to ban them. Can't see them getting much joy though.

I am moaning...Correct. How ever what I am saying is people are more than happy to moan at people when they have done something they dont agree with. Its all down to what you do and that dictates your own opinion. I cant stand the narrow minded people who dont see things from other peoples point of view. I understand that yes it can be frustrating but do any of you actually go speak to these people find out why they use a buggy for. If 1 person in the group has an injury you may not pick it up from 150 yards away yet they could have a problem in there foot that stops them walking x amount of yards.

I dont like the people who will moan about I use a belly putter there legal so I am using one as it benefits me. Next point electric trolleys, oh you guys should get fitter I am a real man as I carry, yet electric trolleys are legal as well.

People play the game for fun its up to them how they decide to do it as long as they are not hurting anyone else. Why should you honestly wish to feel the need to moan about how others enjoy the game they dont judge you because you have decided to carry or push/pull a trolley. I feel very sorry for you guys who wish to moan about how others decide to enjoy there own personal game amongst mates, I dont know whether to laugh or cry at how narrow minded some people are. As for the lose weight comment oh dear I would love to see you go up to John Daly and say that to him. I am sure he would whoop your backside on the course you telling me hes got it all wrong with the weight?

Embrace everyones reasons for doing something and enjoy the game. If you want to complain then do it about your own game not other peoples enjoyment.

Jammag one of the reasons I took up golf was to relax and enjoy myself on the course. I have no objections to Carts and Buggies providing that those who use them apply common senses and courtesy. I play fairly regularly with two guys who use a buggy as they are retired ex-forces and their kness can't take 18 holes walking.

They taught me to play and the one thing that was drilled into me was to always apply correct etiquatte when on the course, including consideration for others and treating them as you would like them to treat you.

If we have a two ball behind us we let them through as we don't like to be rushed when making shots and we don't like holding players up to the extent where it may spoil their game.

If these lads had walked to their respective balls and played their shots there wouldn't have been an issue however they didn't. They went to one ball and then the other zig zagging across the course from ball to ball.

The fact that there was at least 4 holes clear infront of them before we got halfway around tells a story.

I don't know if you've ever tried to catch a cart but it can be difficult if you are 150-220 yds behind them waiting for them to hole the ball which leaves you 2-3 shots to finish the hole while they tee off and then zip off in their cart. By the time we got to the tee they were still analysing their second shots, giving each other advice before they moved onto the next players ball.

I am probably one of the most patient players you could meet however yesterday I was not very happy. Talking to my playing partner at work today he has advised that there were several complaints and disciplinary action may be taken as they were informed of the competition prior to teeing off and were told to let the players through.

Think you are missing the point though, the OP is moaning because even though they were in a cart they took a long time playing and didn't show any common sense going from ball to ball. Some people have obviously shown a dislike about people who use carts in general but that's their prerogative, rightly or wrongly.

My beef in particular is with dick heads who show no respect to the course or others on the course when they are in a cart.

4 young lads in a golf buggy should take about the same as 2 people on foot.
But when you get stuck behind people, what do you do, the same as everyone else just wait and take it

Seems to be that there is a possible correlation between a lack or irony (not to mention dodgy grammar and spelling) and liking to ride in carts. There is a lot of moaning here about moaning. Funny, that.

Anyway, if any of you fit young men who choose to rid carts want to do so, go right ahead. Its a free country (in some ways). However, note that some of us have observed correlations between those who use carts in the UK and certain behaviours on the course. Not with every cart rider, but certainly a trend. Most of these behaviours are not good. These include a lack of awareness of or regard for other players, hence the cart riders are often slow, walking back and forth to the cart to decide on clubs, measure up the shot with their lasers, check their satnav then duff it into the trees anyway. They also often TALK VERY LOUDLY, as if their witticisms are so good that they can't deprive a wider audience of them (please deprive me!), and they park their carts in the wrong places all the time. So it is often a real PITA, as the kids say, to be behind these gentlemen, especially when they started 20 minutes ahead of you and you caught them at the second green and stay behind them all the way round.

I have used carts in the US many times on courses where they are mandatory, and it doesn't take a genius to figure out how to use them to move around the course properly and quickly and where to park them.

I understand what your saying, but surely your voice reaches a 150 yards when you shout fore? Why was no phone call made to the club pro to say these guys are holding us up any chance you can come have a word or was there no 2 holes than ran alongside each other to nip and have a word. I dont mind waiting around for people to play as I find it interesting watching peoples swing and how they play each hole, how ever I understand that people do like to rush round and done in 3 n half hours n home again. I like to enjoy the countryside but thats just me.

It really grinds me how people are more than willing to go and complain about someone who held them up on a golf course or seniors, juniors, electric trolleys, long handle putters etc etc yet someone who speeds by them on the way home they wont report it to the police. Which one is the actual life threatening thing there? Maybe its the wrong thread to exercise this point but thats how I feel.

I rest my case m'lord.

But he's moaning about someone who was holding him up who shouldn't have been as they were in a cart. Surely if there is something to moan about on the golf course then this is it?

I have to be honest and say if I go to other courses and there are buggies in front of us my heart sinks. Invariably it is going to mean a slow round. At my club we only have one buggy which is hired out to players who have known conditions (we've a guy waiting for a knee op etc).

I think the issue is that there isn't any common sense engaged by the buggy users. As the OP says they drive from ball to ball. Logic dictates the driver should take a direct route, drop the passenger off at a point in the vicinity or en route and let him take a couple of clubs with him to play the shot. Drive on to your own ball, play it and the passenger can be walking back to the vehicle for a lift to the green. Surely this is common sense. It seems to work so much better on the continent. Of all the places in the UK that has buggies perhaps the best is the Ashbury in Devon. The buggies are enforced to stay on the buggy paths along the edge of the hole and so players are forced to walk to the ball anyway. it makes the shots quicker and players then tend to walk on. Maybe I was lucky and pace of play just flowed there but it never seemed to be the left right, left right zig zag I see on most courses
