As most of you are aware its the next GM Challenge match at Royal Ascot tomorrow with myself and Realgolferuk (Dave) representing the GM forum and playing alongside one of my regular golfing partners and his son.

In order to get an upper hand I invited Dave to play a practice round today. Having looked at the weather at 1.30 am this morning (after watching England win the cricket) I wasn't overly hopeful but it in the end we got away with it and were dry all the way round (Dave even took his jumper off and played in a polo shirt.

Having only chatted with Dave via the forum I was a bit nervous about meeting and playing with a complete stranger but I have to say he is an absolutely top bloke and a pleasure to play with.

I gave him the honour on the 229 par 3 first (we played off the whites) and he hit a solid 3 wood just short and made 4. I drove the green and made par!!!!! :D

I hit a cracking drive and 2nd shot to the par 5 2nd and made birdie. The next few holes were a bit scrappy until we came to the 5th. After pushing his 2nd at the par 5 into light rough (and then moaning that he hated uphill shots with a 3/4 wedge) Dave stuck it to 4 foot for a majestic birdie. :)

We continued round, swapping golfing stories. chatting about the forum and some of you guys and looking forward to tomorrow and before we knew it were on the 18th.

I boomed a great drive and Dave hit a good shot with a slight fade. We both hit 5 woods for our seconds (its 531 yards par 5 uphill) and neither made really good contact and were left with about 140 yards with the pond in front of the green to carry. I hit a 6 iron into the wind but baled out and put it left into a greenside bunker. Dave however took the same club and with no fear and ice coarsing through his veins struck his approach across the whole carry of the pond and onto the green. Two putts later and a satisfactory par to finish.

It was a really enjoyable game. Dave is great company and loves his golf. He strikes a solid ball, and although not the longest, for the most part is very straight. His short game was in fine fettle although he had a few problems with some of the subtle borrows on the greens.

As a four-ball partnership we agreed we both complemented each others games and so it is with hope in our heart that we will uphold the traditions and pride of the GM forum.

Bring it on

Go Homer, Go Dave...rah, rah, rah! C'mon the Forum.

Glad you enjoyed your practice match with Dave. Sure you will enjoy the Challenge Match and if you're anything like me, Homer, you'll be a bag of nerves on the first tee.

If I were to give you one tip it would be to forget any swing thoughts tomorrow. Just aim and let the brain do the rest. I was messing my brain up with swing thoughts at St Andrew's and it's my worst game of the year (from a golf point of view- not from the enjoyment point of view).

Enjoy and may the best team win, both of you.

Homer....you are too kind. I got to my "old home" in an easy 30 minutes and have been enjoying seeing my family. I will see you on the practice ground before the great GM vs. GM readers match.
We had a good round, for sure (regardless of birdies and doubles). Those of you that know you on the forum will vouch for your sensible, mature and downright gentlemanly approach to all that you say and do. It was a pleasure to play with such a decent chap. I also was very impressed with your "couldn't hit a barn door with a pinnacle" straight driving.....beautiful, mate.....some absolute corkers.
I shan't worry about reading those pesky greens tomorrow, I know you'll show me the way.

Top day's golf, and here's to a solid effort tomorrow. Go the forum!!!!

As a side comment, I loved the course....in every respect. It's new and "waiting to mature fully" (like a good wine) but, hey, your fairways are top, the greens much greener than mine and how great to play off real tees......I hate mats!!!

I'll just keep thinking about that crazy 4 at the par 5!!!...I'm not going down the right tomorrow, no way.

Lads, give it your best shot and most importantly have fun.
You can bet on that.....at some moments, I felt almost too relaxed, it's such a forgiving environment compared to the punishment on my course of being even 5 yds off the fairway. In 20 years it'll be the new Wentworth....

Cheers for that Dave and for kind comments on both my game and the course. I'm still throwing too many shots away but at least I was less directionally challenged today.

I should also point out to everyone that having gone back through the card I finished with 32 points (18 out and 14 back) and you had 34 (16 out and 18 back). A solid effort on a completely new course (with all its nuances)

See you on the practice ground. Here's to a great game (well better than England are doing at half-time!). Glad you enjoyed it today and the course was to your liking
