Hall of Famer
As most of you are aware its the next GM Challenge match at Royal Ascot tomorrow with myself and Realgolferuk (Dave) representing the GM forum and playing alongside one of my regular golfing partners and his son.
In order to get an upper hand I invited Dave to play a practice round today. Having looked at the weather at 1.30 am this morning (after watching England win the cricket) I wasn't overly hopeful but it in the end we got away with it and were dry all the way round (Dave even took his jumper off and played in a polo shirt.
Having only chatted with Dave via the forum I was a bit nervous about meeting and playing with a complete stranger but I have to say he is an absolutely top bloke and a pleasure to play with.
I gave him the honour on the 229 par 3 first (we played off the whites) and he hit a solid 3 wood just short and made 4. I drove the green and made par!!!!!
I hit a cracking drive and 2nd shot to the par 5 2nd and made birdie. The next few holes were a bit scrappy until we came to the 5th. After pushing his 2nd at the par 5 into light rough (and then moaning that he hated uphill shots with a 3/4 wedge) Dave stuck it to 4 foot for a majestic birdie.
We continued round, swapping golfing stories. chatting about the forum and some of you guys and looking forward to tomorrow and before we knew it were on the 18th.
I boomed a great drive and Dave hit a good shot with a slight fade. We both hit 5 woods for our seconds (its 531 yards par 5 uphill) and neither made really good contact and were left with about 140 yards with the pond in front of the green to carry. I hit a 6 iron into the wind but baled out and put it left into a greenside bunker. Dave however took the same club and with no fear and ice coarsing through his veins struck his approach across the whole carry of the pond and onto the green. Two putts later and a satisfactory par to finish.
It was a really enjoyable game. Dave is great company and loves his golf. He strikes a solid ball, and although not the longest, for the most part is very straight. His short game was in fine fettle although he had a few problems with some of the subtle borrows on the greens.
As a four-ball partnership we agreed we both complemented each others games and so it is with hope in our heart that we will uphold the traditions and pride of the GM forum.
Bring it on
