Giving 19 shots away in matchplay...

Ive started recently playing my dad in match play and with our current handicaps I'm giving him 11 shots.
I feel like its way too much and on our last match i was 4 down after 4 holes so that didn't make me feel any better.
Cut a long story short I won the match 2/1, So if everyone playing off the right handicaps then it doesn't matter how many shots they have on you they are going to need them

Played a guy five years ago who was off six - I was 19 at the time (so I got 13 shots) - I started par, par and was two up going down the third - all square at the turn then I had another couple of holes that I won with pars. - From then on he was giving me "You play off 19? - I can't believe that" all the time - I'd have been outside my buffer with a card in my hand - he wouldn't have broken 80 - when we shook hands on the 17th with me having won 2&1 I resisted the urge to say "You play off 6? - I can't believe that"

On the day I was the better of two hackers - if he'd played anything like his handicap he'd have beaten me.

As the title suggests, I'm giving 19 shots away in a 1/4 final of my clubs matchplay. Will be be a new experience for me! I felt bad receiving 5 shots in the first round!

Not asking for sympathy, just what the most amount of shots that you've given?

I once gave 18/19 shots [can't remember exactly] in a KO semi and won on the 11th green.
The guy totally froze, first time he had played a low handicap golfer.

4&3 victory! Had to play well though. Best I've hit my irons in months. That and consecutive birdies must have hurt him!

Played...

And if the boot had been on the other foot, he most likely would have had to play well to beat you. Sounds like handicaps were doing what they are supposed too. There's always the reason the gap is as it is.

On the other side of the coin I play off 16 and received 18 shots from a guy i played down at Burhill. I was actually quite confident as I like to think I'm an improving 16. Anyway, whilst not playing badly I got an absolute humping and we shook hands on the 14th.

It was an experience to play with someone that good and they were a genuinely nice person so not the end of the world.

Young lad I use to play with sometimes had to give 26 shots away in a the club singles once he was off +2. He lost the game after something like 14 or 15 holes, can't remember exactly. He actually managed to birdie a hole and loose to a par nett eagle, on the SI 1 (par 5) he eagled it and only got a half. He said it put him off ever playing in it again as you really can't play against it, Simon was a couple under gross when he lost, but said the his FC played a typical high handicap round. Quite a few doubles, and even picked up before the green on a couple of holes, but managed to sneak some pars in and the odd bogey on a 2 shot hole.

I am a believer in keeping max handicap at 28, but in matchplay you should never get more than one shot a hole. But I think the occurrence of more than one shot a hole in matchplay is a rare thing though.

We halved the SI1 hole.

I must say, regardless of me winning, he was a pleasure to play with.
Helps.

I play in quite a lot of inter club friendly matchplay comps. In the past 3 months my handicap has dropped by 7 shots to 16 - I have been improving. In almost all of these comps, I have played players with a similar or better h/cap, have won and heard the same I can't believe you play off x h/cap lament. It occurred to me to keep a note of the gross scores in these comps for both me and the f/c. In each case it showed that I was playing within about half a dozen shots of my h/cap whereas my f/c was not even close to theirs - sometimes not within 12-15 shots.

My point is there seem to be plenty of players out there with unrealistically low handicaps and it is some of those who are most eager to start slapping the "bandit" label on others.

For me it is an amazing 32 shots!.

Only a social game but in Austria where myself and a fellow Brit who is off 8 teamed up against 2 Austrian collegues who were off 44 and 46 (yes they were men and adults before you ask). It seems that handicaps are somewhat different out in Austria and men who play mainly social golf get up to 52 shots (might be 48 cant quite recall)

So myself and Pete played off 13 (8+18) and they played off 45 (44 + 46). Was just for bragging rights and we won

Great fun evening out on a hard working trip (at least that was the report when I got home)
