As the title suggests, I'm giving 19 shots away in a 1/4 final of my clubs matchplay. Will be be a new experience for me! I felt bad receiving 5 shots in the first round!

Not asking for sympathy, just what the most amount of shots that you've given?

23 shots in the first round of our HC KO this year - was a very good match - thoroughly enjoyable

Arf!!!

I'm hoping to get to the 18th still with a chance to win it to be honest!
How did you both get on?

It was a Volvo match play game. Guy hits it 250 yards straight down the middle, wedge to the green almost sank the putt. Here we go I thought ... He then failed to hit a fairway or find most of his balls so was a comfortable winner in the end .

gave 21 in h/cap club champs.

Got annihilated, outdriven, outputted.........and on the Stroke index 1 hole my birdie was good enough for a half:eek:

Gave away 15 shots or thereabouts in a singles many years ago to a 28'er who had one of those days and played like a 15'er.....
Giving a shot on a par 3 and he stiffs it to 6 inches for a gimme birdie - so I needed a hole in one for a half.....

Funnily enough I lost that hole....

What's wrong with you man???

I think 14 is the most I can remember and it didn't get past the 14th. I didn't need to arrange another match! He was off 25 and was +2 gross after 6 holes and I was already four down.

I'm sure I'm not alone in being a high-handicap golfer who has received the "you play off what?" scoff after hitting one or two good shots in a row.

I've still not found a good response to that. I normally say "just wait til the end of the round" but then in my head I'm probably thinking I need to drop shots just to prove a point. Maybe "I'd love to be lower, hopefully after today I will be" is a more positive thing to say.

You just need to focus on the fact that there is a very good reason you're having to give your opponent 19 shots, and that's because you are 19 shots per round better than them. They will almost certainly hit a few good shots and the key thing to remember is that these will almost certainly be the exception rather than the rule.

On the other hand they could be a complete bandit who has protected their handicap and will knock it round in 6 over gross and it will be all over by the 12th hole.

Haha, this thread hasn't helped me!

Nor the fact that in the last round he beat another player who tucked my away 6&5 in a seperate comp! I'll find out in 20odd hours.

Not me as I am a high handicaper who gets all those shots, but my friend playing off 5 gave 17 shots and 1300 yards or so between the tees to a lady in our summer matchplay and was 5 down with 6 to play. He won all 6 and the match.

Still when a low handicap player loses against a high handicapper at least they still have the excuse, "well I did have to give him x number of shots"

If when you've outplayed them on a hole and receive the above comment then I find "& you play off what?" works pretty well as a response

Being high doesn't mean we cant play well, it means we cant play well consistently

Watch out for the classic statement.....

"If only I could play like this with a card in my hand"

Can't remember giving that many away, but was given 19 shots in the final of the junior knockout about 20 years ago, 4 or 5 down at the turn but managed to sneak it on the 18th while he was writing his winners speach!

No result given so did you lose ? myself it was the Semi final of the Spring Cup which is the Handicap Matchplay summer KO at my old club Knighton Heath , max handicap is 18 but any range can play in it , I gave away 14 shots , shot level par near enough to then go to extra holes and had to give him a shot on the 1st 4 extra holes and lost on the 3rd Extra hole a par three , he hit the green and was about 10 feet away so hole in one to win or a birdie to carry on , the hole is over 200 yards long and I manage a par and lost .............made the final the year after beating the same guy in an earlier round , oh he when on to win it easy that year in the final

Sounds like a great match.
