Gimmies

WE tend not to play things like fiddles or whatever you call them, but I was once told (or read) to only give less than a putter grip length in matchplay and that has held me in good stead. Although early in a match I might give a 2 footer to store some goodwill. but on the back nine if I am behind I give nothing.

My thought has always been if you pay money into a pot bigger than your individual group it should be played by the rules. Don't get bothered though if I happen to play in a swindle that gives things so long as they aren't two footers +.

We play every Friday with guys from work, gimmies is always the source of much banter, gimme length depends on the putt and the player, we play for £2 and a weeks bragging rights and you're generally getting nothing over 18" shorter if you're a dodgy putter or it's a wee downhill slider. If one person in the 4 ball doesn't agree it's a gimme then it needs putted.
As for asking for them, no danger matey! The cheek of that! You can have it when it hits the bottom of the cup would be the reply.

Sounds like a good laugh that!

If I've got a gimmie range putt for birdie or EAGLE, I'm putting it don't you worry!

Wouldn't be through choice if playing with me 😜
I only play bounce games & it's in good humour.
If someone is having a mare I tend to be more generous.

Our 8am swindle have just stopped gimmes after decades of having them, as there was no consistency in the distances being given, some groups you would be given everything from 4ft then the next group wouldn't give anything outside a couple of inches! I'd prefer to hole out anyway, plus it stops all those puppy-dog eyes when someone has the two and a half footer they don't really fancy!

I'd love to introduce that in our Saturday swindle as it's similar where the length of given putt varies from group to group. How did you do this and how was it received. I can see quite a few of our older/higher handicappers perhaps not being so keen

I don't know how it was introduced I was on holiday when it happened apparently there was only one objection, out of a group that can be mid thirty people plus (most over 50 and a good portion over 60) and most thought it a good idea!

At the club, in the swindle with money at stake - putt. Although we do have "putter shaft but not grip" length gimmees on any temp greens in winter.

With mates outside the club where there's never any money at stake - gimmees a plenty. But what makes me want to belt them on the bonce with a putter is when you give one, then they still putt out anyway. I gave it so they wouldn't fart about and we could move on - not because it was easy. Grrrr

As a variation on this theme. In foursomes match last weekend mentioned elsewhere - on 4th hole both pairs were left putts of just under 2ft. Opponent looked at me and suggested a pair of gimmes and a half - I said nope. He looked a bit confused.

I'm sure you had your reasons - state of match, above and below hole, opponents putting competence v yours etc etc you have the experience to recognise when 2 x 2ft putts aren't the same.

Actually we had basically the same pretty straightforward but eminently missable putt. Their's an inch longer. It was the 4th hole. I was putting and wanted the opportunity to hole the putt - it's good for me but not terrible if I miss it. And I wanted to put their player putting (the lower handicapper and the 'son' of the pairing) under a bit of pressure, his dad shouldn't have put him 2ft past the hole. Yes - matchplay tactics, but also part of my own personal 'needs' when playing matchplay (holing an early slightly awkward length putt - not my forte).

I think the 'dad' was surprised how little thought I seemed to put into his offer and my curt 'nope' :)
