Why not plenty of Women only clubs about.

Exactly.

I really do not get the holier than thou brigade that get upset regards all Gents Clubs as there are plenty all female clubs about and I am not just talking about golf.

If that is what they like I really do not see why anyone would have an issue with it.

Add me to this camp also.

Can't see the big deal, I have no desite to join the WRI, nor will I ever make a song and dance that it is a womens only organisation.

At my local gym, men and women pay the same subs. Naturally women can use all facilities but also have their own special 'pink' room where women can exercise amongst only other members of their own fragrant gender. No similar men only room. I call that discrimination.

On a rather simplistic level you are correct. If you think about it you might manage to understand why such safe spaces exist.

Not sure what MCP stands for and care even less .They do so off their own bat and to be honest it is their little touches that help make the 19th a welcoming place

Male Chauvinist Pig, I reckon. Does seem a bit harsh given your well-intentioned comments but, personally, I joined a golf club to play golf rather than to keep it nice for the male members.... ;)

I think he misunderstood your comments as being sexist mate

No one forces them to do it but lets be honest, we all take advantage of their hospitality when they are manning the drinks marquee at club champs and captains day. I have no problem with them just being members same as me and enjoying their golf. Every little helps as they say and I for one appreciate their efforts

Safe spaces? I've heard them called many things, mainly weight and religious reasons, but never 'safe spaces'.

I would not want to be part of any club that has a time or area limit depending on your gender.

they have to offer it for muslim ladies

Oh Goody, a popcorn thread!

I couldn't care less whether there is men only, women only or mixed only golf clubs. All I would like to do is play golf. If I want aggravation I'll go to work.

However, just for the hell of it my 2p's worth. If there was a corridor with two doors in it, one saying men only and one saying women only the following would happen. The men would go in the men only room, and not care a toss about the other room. The women would want to go in both, and would justify their right by shouting sex discrimination.

*Stands back and waits for the howls of derision*

Nail on head.

Popcorn is on my lap, ready to take it all in.;)

I don't know if this is typical of most clubs or unique to mine.
For years there were three types of membership (not counting juniors). These were:
Gents Ordinary..play anytime for 100% subs.
Associate ...midweek play only for approx. 60% of full subs.
Ladies Associate... Midweek play plus restricted times at weekends for approx. 70% of full subs.
In 2010, the club had 130 lady members ( all Ladies Associates )
Then, in 2011 the Equality act was brought in.
There is now only two categories of adult membership open to both gents and ladies:
Ordinary membership 100% subs. And Associate 65% subs.

This year there are 12 ladies who are full Ordinary members and 70 who are Associates.
So this means that there are now 48 less ladies who are now playing golf at my club due to the new Equality legislation because they were quite happy with the way things were.

I don't think this is good for the club or golf in general.

Years ago there was a really funny fly on the wall documentary about Northwood Golf Club. I always remember one old boy saying that he didn't mind the ladies playing the course, but he was amazed that the could be on the tee by 9.00, when they had their husbands breakfast to make, and then do all their housework.:mmm:

Either I've totally misunderstood the figures you've presented (possible) or you've jumped to the wrong conclusion.

It seems to me that your 130 ladies could have retained the same membership rights they had previously and actually paid less money for them.

Therefore, I suspect there are other reasons for the decline in membership.

When I took up golf only 5 years ago was put off joining a local club because of their apparent sexist approach to women playing golf.. some of the comments on this forum make me wish i had never taken the game up as the prehistoric views that people have astounded me in the 21st Century. I want to play golf and I want it to be inclusive not exclusive, do people have same views on youngsters playing.. makes my blood boil to read some of the comments that are made.. if people have these views than its time for me to distance myself from such a forum and magazine whose name allows these comments to be made.. subscription cancellation letter will be on its way.. will the last person i the mens only club please turn the lights off as they leave .. goodnight and goodbye

No, FD, they couldn't retain the previous rights.
Please read my post again.
The now defunct Ladies associate category offered full midweek and restricted weekend playing rights.

Ah right, so they scrapped the Lady Associate and only offered Full or Associate (midweek only) membership. I see.

Perhaps they should have made the Associate membership match the old Lady Associate and offered it to both men and women? It's stupid for me to speculate knowing nothing about your club but too easy to simply blame the equality legislation.

In general though, equal rights is an important principle, IMO, and many women including myself wouldn't join a club that didn't offer it.
