Many years ago golf shoes used to come with frilly bits of leather that attached to the laces. Can't remember what they were called. Although they looked a bit naff, they did help to keep the water out when searching for balls in deep wet rough. Wearing a modern pair of golf shoes this morning I found that water was getting into them through the lace holes and around the tongue. They are waterproof from the bottom up, but not from the top down. Could the frilly bits be brought back?

I discovered waterproof socks last year, best thing since sliced bread. The water comes in, your feet feel cold, then the water warms up & you feel comfortable for the rest of the round. Work a bit like a wet suit, really effective. But, yes, I wish they'd put the frilly bits (I don't know the name either) back on too.

Like these Pumas?

there was a review on spikeless shoes in this months GM and quite a few pairs had these "tongue frills"

I used to cut mine off as soon as they were out the box.

Manufacturers just need to sort out a better way to protect the top of the shoe from attracting and guiding water into the feet

I have never had a problem with the lace holes on my FJs, water comes in over the heel though..

I've had FJ ankle boots for three seasons and they still keep my feet dry - and I'm talking about a course renowned for being seriously wet and muddy.
But they get a serious clean and polish after every game.

I was wearing almost new FJ Greenjoy golf shoes! While wading through some deep wet grass searching for a friends ball, I could definitely feel water seeping in through the lace holes and around the tongue, and my socks were definitely a bit damp when I finished the round.

"friends", admit it, you were looking for your own ball ;)

Sealskinz are one of the biggest brands of waterproof sock but aren't cheap. Had a pair of knee length sealskinz for fishing and they worked really well even one time when I stepped into water over the length of my boot. Took it off emptied the water and went on with dry feet. Wish I still had them but lost one and no idea where it is.
