Forgiving Wedges

Sorry for another wedge thread, seems to have been a few lately.

I think this year it's time I upgraded my wedges, I've had my RTX 50 and 56 for over five years now. I'm interested in the cavity-backed more forgiving wedges that I've seen now. Is anyone using these to great success? The Cleveland CBX range seems to be a standout, think Callaway do a CB type wedge as well. Are there any others I should consider?

I know plenty of people don't hit full shots with wedges but I do, so figured the little extra forgiveness might be helpful. Would probably go for 50 & 54 this time though, my 56 doesn't get much use to be honest as it feels like a potential knife machine sometimes - or on a grassy lie whips straight under the ball.

I've got the CBX2 in 50+54 (and a Ping 60).....I think they are great, and for a lot less than the bigger names.

Ping Glide wedges are great. I use them for full shots.

I talked a friend, off 20, to buy a cavity back wedge.
He's grateful to me for it, as he's much more comfortable.

I've wondered why we talk people out of buying blades, but then most specialist wedges are blades themselves.

Yeah, I agree, it is odd. These wedges I had I just bought them second hand five years ago, didn't give much thought to it. But I'm sure a little bit of forgiveness wouldn't go amiss, especially off of different lies.

Ping Glide wedges are great. I use them for full shots.

Yeah, I agree, it is odd. These wedges I had I just bought them second hand five years ago, didn't give much thought to it. But I'm sure a little bit of forgiveness wouldn't go amiss, especially off of different lies.

Most wedges have the sweet spot nearer to the heal, so if you are to hit them perfectly you need to get closer to the shank than most would like.
As such, the extra help of the cavity back should make contacts not so close to the sweet spot a bit better.

Thanks, I wouldn't go for graphite though personally.

Another random wedge question that I've always wondered - a lot of them come up as stiff flex when you look online but is that just a thing they do with wedges typically? Like sometimes it just says 'wedge flex' or something instead. Are wedges just stiffer flex by default?

At my recent Srixon fitting I had a few hits with the CBX wedge. Was a solid wedge that pretty much performed no matter where I tried to hit it. I didn't go with them because I am generally a strong wedge player and would prefer bladed ones to match my set.

I went wedge flex on my shafts as I was told as we swing them slower than our irons you don't need to be as stiff/heavy

I overthought it and got a bit creative when I ordered my Glide 4 wedges.
50° with the heaviest stiffest Dynamic Gold shaft, knowing I'd mostly use it for less than full swings and chipping.
56° with a lighter Elevate 95 shaft, knowing I'd be using it for fast armsy swings out of bunkers.
As it turned out, I use both for partial swings, chipping and full swings and both are great for everything.

Yes it is rare to find wedge only clubs that are not wedge flex or stiff . I have been known to change the shaft for a TTDG R300.

Wedge flex can mean a heavier shaft as well. At one time it was common to see TTDG 400 in a wedge and it might well be what a wedge flex shaft is.
