Living in a country where even in towns pavements are a rarity, I had to very quickly adjust to the different ‘hazard spotting’ needed. Even forgetting about the many road users who don’t care to make themselves visible after sunset & other clowns who think traffic lights don’t apply to them, now I just expect someone to be walking on every bit of road & round every corner and drive accordingly
Also weirdly, the habit here is folk will walk with the traffic flow instead of towards it & still can’t quite get my head round that, it would give me the fear doing that

Driving down the Main Street in Turre, a week ago, I recognised the car coming towards as being that of a friend. I also know that he plays golf on a Monday, and that the time suggested he’d stopped back for a good few beers. About 50 yds away he veered towards my side of the road and was 3/4 across when he swerved back.

I saw him the following day and wasn’t gentle. He didn’t remember any of it. He doesn’t want his wife to know as his marriage is on shaky ground because of his drinking. He’s drunk after almost every bowls day but his wife drives on bowls days.

”Do it again and it won’t just be your wife that finds out. I’ll go to the Police with the dash cam footage.” Sadly, I’d forgot to plug it in last week but it is now.

Last evening coming driving back from cricket practice on a single carriageway, the car in front of me went around a bend and then saw it tail lights come on really quickly.. I thought it must have been a deer or a fox darting across.. he kept going slowly till safe to overtake. As he moved out of the way,.. saw a laid back bike. it was so low, i am assuming the rider getting splashed with every pothole or smelling up all the exhaust. The only reason a car driver could see him was because he had an orange flag behind him.

My son was fascinated by him as i overtook it. Even he did not notice it till i pointed out the flag.. apparently he had a hi-viz on (which was difficult to see, since he was lying down)

Any HGV guy would struggle to see him and if they did try to overtake, the HGV guy would never know when he cut back.. I have seem some of these in a place called London (or other european touristy places) but never on the B roads of Surrey..

He might kill someone next time!

There is a guy near me who rides one of these. The flag is crucial as otherwise you really can't see him. Awful looking contraption and incredibly dangerous on a busy road. They are 'look at me bikes'.

While @Rooter may disagree with you... I agree with you. Its like a toddler on a road. Should be restricted on where you can ride it. Without that flag, he would not even appear on my radar. While my car has pedestrian detecting radar, he will appear as a speed bump.

I don't like them either, but I think they're designed for cyclists with back problems who can't ride a "normal" bike anymore.

i had to google it. and read about it. fair play but tbh, i would hope that those with back problems should ride in a less dangerous environment. There are enough blind idiots like me driving cars around

Never judge someone until you've ridden a mile down a winding country lane on his recumbent cycle. That's the saying, int it?

And there is the problem!! You are driving a legalized weapon weighing in at a ton and a half, you have a massive responsibility to not kill anyone, but you have no more rights to be on the road than a walker, runner, cyclist, horse rider.

Society in the UK with regards to roads and driving is all wrong thinking the car is king, it's changing, just look at Paris who have really embraced cycling as a fully viable transportation medium for all. I wont even mention Amsterdam!!

I'd agree with you as long as all the other road users realise that the Highway Code applies to everyone, and not just drivers or cars, vans and lorries. And the issue is that as a more vulnerable road user, you are more likely to be injured than if driving a car so, like it or not, you have to be extra diligent. There is no benefit to having "I told you I was in the right" on your headstone.
As for electric scooters. I don't understand how these are allowed without some form of licencing. It's a powered vehicle that people of any age can use, and without impunity. Stronger regulation for them is required IMO.

Amsterdam is a dangerous place .
I saw zero car crashes but lost count of the cycle crashes on a weekend there.
Tourists just walk out in front of bikes because they are not used to the Lane system they have.

You're right. My error. You need a provisional licence but there doesn't seem to be anything to stop anyone using them.
There are trials going on around the country where you can hire one, we're part of it here.
I can't remember the criteria but you definitely need a Provisional and there are restrictions on where you can go.
These "hire" scooters are legal as part of the cost of the hire covers insurance
All other electric scooters are illegal to use in a public place - it's a shame/disgrace that purchasers don't seem to be told this.

It's a bigger shame, and probably nearer the truth, that they don't actually give a :poop:.

We have so many around here..never see a rider with a helmet, almost always on the pavement.
Could have taken one out the other day.
One of the kids, fortunately a good driver, was turning left, illegal scooter crossed the road in front of us without looking.
She saw the idiot and acted accordingly...
I think they're deathtraps
