Well today I had my first ever custom fit @ the Belfry, it was only for a hybrid but still my first ever time getting a CF. I got there early and had a warm up on the range with 40 balls which started off well but took a turn for the worst towards the end with some ugly hooks rearing there head... Great I thought just before I'm about to go in

Anyway into the Ping room I went and the fitter got me to hit some 6 irons to allow him to see some of the numbers I was producing. After that I hit my 4 iron and he showed me the numbers I was producing and to be honest all I can remember was the average carry distance which was 200YRDS. Long story short I was fitted for the Ping G25 in tour stiff with 20 degree loft.

Now the fun part...

I wanted to have a bash of the G25 driver and I did, again with the tour stiff shaft and all I can say is what a club!!! I hit 6/7 shots and the thing just rockets straight down the range. The club felt perfect in terms of weight, length and looked great behind the ball. My average with the driver was 249 and on the computer screen there is a grey area where the ideal ball flight should be and every shot was within the area. The numbers where perfect (according to the fitter) and I loved it. When I picked my RBZ up after it just felt like a light, cheap, long piece of crap with a noodle for a shaft. So that will more than likely be my next purchase.

While I was there I had a bash with a few Vokey's to find out which would be better out of the 50/52 degree for 110-120 yard shots and the 50 seemed the way to go.

So that's that ill be picking my new G25 hybrid very soon and can now blame any bad shots on the Reg flex shafts in my irons and as for my driver I don't even want to swing it again.

Very fun experience overall

So you were carrying your 4 iron 200yds on average yet an amazing driver wasnt even getting to 250? If you are carrying your 4iron 200 you should be getting more than 250 from a driver (total or carry its not clear but reads as total?). How far did the hybrid go that you bought? Is that for the gap or as a 4 iron replacement?

Glad you enjoyed :)

Sorry all distances where carry and your right 250 total would be crap with the perfect driver.

All distances where carry

So if I was playing at The open this week it would be totalling around 400 yards?

Don't forget the 4 iron has a loft of 21 degrees so not far off a 3 iron and yes ill now use the hybrid instead of the iron. In getting the 3 hybrid I'm thinking long term when I get a set of clubs with normalish lofts and the 4 iron will be around 23 degrees.

Plenty of them been getting it out there to 400yds this week lol, why not :)

Makes a bit more sense then, 21 degrees is a 3 iron in my language, my 4 iron is 24 and my 3 iron 21 I believe, makes the gaps more sensible (shouldve realised you had TM irons that the lofts were strong)

I doubt ill ever buy TM again mate the whole collection just looks and feels crap and tacky. Titelist and Ping from now on. I'm looking forward to seeing what the next Ping I series irons will be like. I nearly said scarp the hybrid ill have the driver lol it just felt quality and I would love to bang one down the middle of a few holes on the PGA to see where they end up in this weather.

Hybrid should be plenty in these conditions :) Save the driver for autumn/winter when you'll need it (you'll obv have bought one by then!!!). Never personally been a TM fan but plenty out there are. Always good to get clubs your happy with and think are the best option for you, whatever brand they may be

if i hit it 250 down every hole i be a very happy man.

I do go the gym a lot though mate so my strength and power is a lot higher than the average without sounding like a nob. So in turn the distance should be there. With some tweaks to my swing I reckon it could be a lot more but that's why I'm off 17. My driver is one of my consistent clubs though.

After updating my Sig (Very sad) I've just realised what a mess my bag is... Irons Regular, Driver Stiff and hybrid Tour Stiff. It's like a custom fitters demo bag. Oh well we learn the hard way. I suppose the irons have served me well with learning the game over the past 2 years and the driver only cost me a fiver.

I have moved back to using regular shafted irons. when using stiff irons I tend to want to swing as hard as I can with them as the stiff shaft allows you to do this.

when I swing the reg irons, I seem to put a much better swing on them knowing full well I cant have a snappy transition at the top of the backswing.

ive never been custom fit for irons so im not 100% what feels and produces the best numbers.

Oh I forgot to add the custom fitting was free... Pay £50 but get it off what ever you buy. For that I got an hour with a fitter to basically have a bash with what ever I wanted. Great deal I believe.

And no offence to Homer but after reading his CF thread where he payed was it £90? Then bought a whole set of G25 clubs but had no refund on the fit I believe its a great deal.

Probably worth you getting some numbers to see if your using the right shafts but then off 9 your a very good player so you will probably know what's best yourself from feel.

I used the same nike pro combo reg irons for 4 years. I just changed to stiff mizuno mp52's at Christmas as I got them for a good price.

I put the nikes back in the bag last week and its been like being reunited with an old friend. I am finding it a hell of a lot easier to work the ball in both ways with the bladed short irons.

the main thing ive noticed about the nikes is that they have a sharper leading egde. the mizunos are quite rounded. I come in quite steep and I feel the nikes just make so much better contact.

I wouldnt truest the flight scope in the ping room mate. It was saying I was carrying my anser 279. But I could see it landing before the 250 sign!

It was bang on in terms of my 6 iron and 4 iron distances so I can't not believe it. Also was on the dot for the wedges as I was dropping them on the 110 flag and the computer confirmed it.

I think with the longer clubs it struggles to track them and uses prediction. It was spot on for my 7 iron but crap with the driver and 4 wood. The track man in the callaway room had the carry on the anser 4 wood at 15yrds less. Or....... The 250 sign could be in thr wrong place. I wouldnt put it past them

All I know is I've never hit my RBZ on that range with that ball flight and consistency. Too go with my own thoughts the numbers it was producing where also great. I've forgot them now but he did talk me through them all.

As for the 250 sign it does look a lot further than 50 yards past the 200 yard flags in my opinion. It looks like they have just slapped them at the back of the range where as the flags are all done with a rangefinder aren't they.
