I started with a half set of Range Master woods and irons and a cheapo putter like you'd find in a crazy golf hut. I had a 2 and 4 wood, no driver, try finding a 2 wood nowadays! Anyway they were solid and heavy, made in Scotland, had avon grips and true temper shafts, they lasted about a year until I upgraded to a second-hand full iron set (3-SW) of MacGregor MCX's and Ryder Mk.III woods (1,3,5) and an Acushnet bullseye flanged putter - it was ace, wish I'd kept that but it was traded-in on a Ping Anser in 1987 I think.

In 1992, my mum got me a set of wilson sam snead blades 3 to sw. Was missing an 8 iron though. I'm suprised I continued to play. Beginner + blades = disaster :-(
Likewise, full set for me including good old wooden woods, way back in 1983, to be followed by Wilson Walter Hagens, my first brand new set, and susequently Wilson 1200GE.

A set of Wilson X31 irons and a Taylor Made putter. I started without a wood !
Played the set about 6 months. Returning from my first trip together with my golf clubs (Ireland) I found them damaged on transport. Credit Card insurance copensated for a new set and I bought Titleist DCI irons and Tour Model woods

First real set was half set of Mizuno Astron Irons which I got from my best mate when he went on his first holiday to florida and splashed out on a set of Pings.
A Daiwa putter (made by the fishing rod people - I wish I still had it) and a driver which was hand carved from timber from Noahs ark.
All in a garish red nylon carry bag with furry strap and no name.

No golf shoes / waterproofs / designers shirts or any of that palaver.

I fitted right in at the Larkhall muni course which was identified as the cheapest pay and play course in the UK a couple of years back at £4.50 a round. Happy days!

First club was a Phil Rogers (I think..Phil somebody)forged 5 iron, with a cane like shaft, that was used on nearby fields by 3 of my friends and me.

First proper set was a 2nd hand set of Sam Snead blade irons and Persimmon 2,4 and 5 woods-still believe that there's nothing better than the feel of a well struck shot with a 'wood' wood.

Wilson blades, half set, with wilson 5, 3 and 1 wood with persimmon heads the size of a cotton reel, and stiff steel shafts.
Moved up to a set of game improving wilson 1200GEs when my Dad bought himself his first set of Pings.
First proper driver was a Callaway H2S2, which was really the forerunner of the modern big headed drivers (before the warbirds and big berthas came along).

I featured in the magazine for this post last time.

My first set was a set of regal, in a nasty blue bag. 1 3 5 woods, 4-pw cost 150quid for the lot from tj hughes about 11 years ago. Only used them for the first time last October, when I really got into golf, I went out and bought the stuff in my signature.

How much did ping putters cost in the 80s i not old enough to know i always thought they would of been expensive

I don't know why I remember this but my Ping Anser was £35 from the pro shop at Inverness GC in 1987.
Must've been a lot of money back then. Can't remember what I got back for the Bullseye though.
Truth is Anser and me didn't get on very well, putting has always been a love/hate thing with me, it's either great or rubbish. The older you get the harder those 4 footers become.

The first set I had were cut down hichory shafted Morris irons and 3 wood, off my first wage packet I bought a second hand set of [I think] gary player irons, 1&3wood [perssimmon] and 3,5,7,9 PW & SI had to buy a putter out of the scrap bag.
Sold them on when i joined up then bought a 1/2 set of Pinseekers when i came back on leave [left them at the old mans house].
Now have a set of graphite shafted and too many woods.
am going to get a hybrid this weekend to replace the 3&4 irons.

My ping Anser 2 was £45 from my pro back in 1982. Can't remember if that was full price (I doubt it as I got a staff discount as the assistant) but I thought at the time it was the best putter on the market

1st set was either pinseeker or max faulkner (can't remember which) from my ma's catalogue, had them from about 14 to 20 with a St Andrews blade putter which i still have somewhere, persimmon 3 wood which I also have somewhere.
Upgraded irons to palm springs desert classics fro the first AG in the UK the got some CF pal springs ASW which i still have in garage. along with an early 80's berylium copper ping pal 6 putter.
I just can't seem to throw anything away.

Ah the Greentree irons. That was what all my mates and I aspired to when we were in our early days of playing. I ended up with a half set which lasted for a few years before being shelved in favour of a set of Sayers Crown irons. Still tiny heads compared with todays efforts.

I hope you holed a few with it, Homer! £45 for a putter in those days and with a discount!
