Fire works

I personally enjoy fireworks and over the last 2-3 years have let some off from the bottom of my garden (a good 160 feet from the house).....BUT its the people who decide that 10, 11, 12 at night is the right time to do it that annoys me. People are trying to sleep, kids are in bed and the animal situation is one close to my heart.

I'd be a fan of only allowing them in a certain time period....e.g. 7:30 til 8:30 (or similar). Imagine an hour where all the houses on your street were letting them off, now that would be fun!

fireworks and bonfire societies are part of the local culture here in Sussex with events running from early Sept to late Nov - all very pagan.

How there are not more injuries at the annual Lewes procession I will never know - there are parents with children on shoulders lining the streets while knobs chuck fireworks and let off rockets off as they walk.

I recall enjoying fireworks as a kid, however as an adult I find them pretty boring tbh, maybe just seen them once too often. Big bonfire and burgers/beer is always good though.
You have to wonder if it's sensible to have fireworks on general sale. Not sure if a ban is right but they can become pretty anti-social in the wrong hands. Organised events only seems reasonable to me. They are explosives after all.

There will always be a minority of idiots in all activities - that doesn’t mean drastic banning to spoil other sensible people’s enjoyment. Every year we have a little display around friends and also at New Year

Not saying you're not sensible with them Phil, but what about neighbours - could you be spoiling other people's enjoyment?
2 doors down from us always have a session of fireworks on 5/11....about an hour of explosions from about 8. If I'm watching TV or doing anything in fact, it's quite disturbing, especially when one goes astray and hits your window before exploding feet away from you..

really? you cant put up with a weekend of fireworks because it stops you enjoying your tv?

I'm not a massive firework fan but i dont see why my dislike of fireworks should impact on other people's enjoyment. are we going to ask people to be quiet at 12:00am on new years eve next.

my dog is scared of the fireworks so I simply bring him in the house and turn up my tv.

So we including all the kids etc shouldn’t have 20 mins or so enjoyment because it might disturb someone watching telly ?

11000 injuries and 4 deaths in firework related incidents last year.
Just saying.
For every 3 or 4 responsible home displays there's a idiot.

Why not just go to an organised display and then have a party at home after...?

Memories of an empty Biro taped to the pushbike handlebars, opposite ends of the subway/underpass with a pack of mini rockets each.

Just me then? Thankfully we were not great at aiming on the move.

I used to organise an annual display for the school pta , used a professional display outfit which cost £2000 for a 25 minute aerial show.

Used to get 750 people in at £10 for a family ticket. Made a mint on hot dogs, beer tent, mulled wine and glow sticks.

Happy , safe and finished by 8pm

Used to our biggest 'earner' when I was on the local PTA.

I have couple of neighbours who think it is fine to let off their fireworks just after midnight. Some of us like our beauty sleep on News Years Eve.

how many people get injured or die from excessive alcohol consumption?

we drink for fun and entertainment so should we ban that too?

The local display is £7 per adult - £3 per child - when you count up all the people within our group that’s a lot of money that we can spend on our own fireworks at someone’s place with no hassles and never had any issues

Me I love um, Missis T cannot stand them. If you think it's bad here. Get yourself to Germany or Holland New Year's Eve. It's mental. Walking to Brandenburg gate for the New Year's Eve party ( which is brilliant compared to Edinburgh ). Me and Missis T were watching a dad five a lesson to his 8ish year old son on how to light and throw fireworks. It was surreal.

went to bed last night at around midnight and was closing the curtains in one on the front bedrooms only to see two lots it different parts of Inverness being set off .

at least it was far enough away and could not hear the noise.

Over 200,000 DIY injuries, 8000 deaths a year in home accidents!
