False Economies

I don't buy golf clubs addictively (although it is a fight at times I have to admit!) but over the last 2 years I have replaced all the clubs in my bag with the exception of the putter. This has been mainly funded by my asking my family to put money on my account at the club instead of buying me presents so it's allowed me to indulge myself and support my club pro.
It's allowed me to replace my irons and driver, get new shoes and a bag, without anybody splashing out large amounts of money at once.
I do like good quality shoes and waterproofs as I come from an age when the only waterproof you could buy were Dunlop rubber ones, and the leather ones wrecked your feet and leaked like a sieve. Waterproofs I get in a sale and last year got a Sunice Gore-tex top at a bargain price thanks to an error at Direct Golf in their online pricing. Just waiting for something similar on the trousers once I can find a pair suitable for a chubby short-house.

Anything that keeps you dry. Plenty of good waterproofs out there. Not sure how waterproof shoes are especially if you are walking in rough where it will get in through lace holes etc so waterproof socks a big must for me. As for anything else, within reason, you can play with most second hand clubs and gear around today

Was thinking the other day about where it's worth spending premium money on golf equipment and where it's not, but we do anyway.

The only area I could actually think of where you should probably spend as much as you can afford was shoes. Maybe good waterproofs if you play in rain a lot.

Lets face it. Most of the other items we spend over the top on it's more to do with that we want to, rather than we need to.

I'm sure I'd play pretty much the same with a budget ball and a reasonable set of 2nd hand clubs. Even a cheaper GPS or Range finder give you all you really need 99% of the time.

BUT, after going cheap out on a couple of pairs of shoes and them practically crippling me, that's the one area I'm more than happy to spend top dollar.
I have odd size feet and had Footjoy contours made to measure off their website.
pro measured my feet with Branaguh slide thing.
They were sent to my pro ,best shoes I have ever owned will never buy off the shelf again.
