Why do fairway woods sound so sweet off the face. My driver sounds nice although a bit hollow but the 3 wood has a beautiful metallic click.

Don't think it's my particular club as other fairways at the range sound similar?

Doesn't have quite the same sound as a well struck 3 wood but my driver was zinging at the range yesterday. Sweetspot definitely found. I'm guessing it has something to do with the size of the head but its a very good question

could it be the resonance inside the driver, and are the faces of drivers thinner than fairway woods
Driver sounds are actually 'tuned' - though you wouldn't think so with older Cobras and Nikes!

Fairway faces can be thinner than Driver ones because that COR/CT rules only apply the 'Driving Clubs' and they are smaller.

Even Steel faces produce a lovely 'ting' - and Pro's often prefer that sound/feel. The 'Tour Only' HFS (Hot(/Happy) Face Steel) was rushed out to them as many disliked the (Titanium) R7.

PM sent re wedges.

oddly. I dislike the sound of my 909 3 wood. It has a very dull sound, cant tell just from the sound if its a good contact. On the other hand an old sumo 4 wood makes a lovely crack when struck sweet. odd.

I think you will find the cor rules apply to all clubs.

which was the driver that used to cause partial deafness and tinnitus? Sounded like a shotgun going off...

I think its just to do with the space behind the face, drivers have a large airspace to resonate where fairway woods have a flatter smaller head that deadens the sound to a click rather than a fuller sound.

The 3 wood and the driver make similar pleasant sounds. :)

dont tempt me! i shouldnt really have splashed out on it but couldnt resist after hitting my brothers. im going to use it off the tee for holes with a tight line or holes where you dont need the driver. used it twice today instead of driver and i couldnt have placed it better. kept me out of trouble. pity my putter was stone cold.

i hit the burner 2.0 driver last year 3 times at a demo and handed it back, couldnt stand the sound, agree with 3 woods in general giving a nice ting when struck

The 3 wood is my go to club from the tee for tight/short tee shots. Still long but much more forgiving.

dropping my 3 wood as its slice city. got the mizuno in regular shaft and i probably need a 3 wood in that two. the whip just seems to help.
