Experts, offers of advice or opinions?

Been reading some of the threads on here recently, and I'm starting to get a little confused.

I'm finding it hard to distinguish between an expert, an advice giver, (ie, this worked for me, I was told by my pro), to opinions that sometimes appear to contradict what others have said. These opinions came from experts and others.

As far as I'm aware, aside from Neil's analysis of our swings, Bobmac is our only resident forumer who is a current teaching pro. He has also been a gem to this forum. I get the impression that sometimes he's 'locked' in this section of the forum answering all our questions.

I'm not being handicapist (word?) by saying that high h'cappers don't have anything to offer in this section. But I do think that when posting we should make it clear exactly where we are coming from when replying to others questions.

If we have any other teaching pros around here, please come out of the closet. We'd welcome your input.

As for everyone else. Please keep sharing your titbits with us, you never know, that little gem might work for some of us. But please be clear about what the advice is and where it's from.

After all, it's nigh impossible to correct a swing in words alone. What I think I'm doing, and what I'm actually doing. Could be completely different things.

Cheers.

I agree with the sentiment. There does tend to be some conflicting advice in this section and the person seeking guidance could become easily confused.

What I would say is that there are some members on this forum who are not teaching pro's but know what they are talking about. However, it is difficult to distinguish between those who know what they are talking about, and those who don't. I think I fall somewhere in between (probably more in the "don't" camp!) but I have had a few lessons and am genuinely interested in the mechanics of the golf swing. I will therefore share my experiences if I think it will help others, but will admit defeat if I am digging a hole for myself!

Perhaps the answer would be for the teaching pro's among us to have a 'P' next to their name or something? That way it will be clear to the reader what is genuine pro advice, and what are the general 'tit bits' that may be useful.

It is on record several times that I think the advice and knowledge in here is for the most part, awesome.
Sometimes I see a question asked, which is answered perfectly well without me sticking my oar in so enough said.
Unfortunatly, there have been a small number of occasions where the advice given hasn't been strictly accurate for that specific question.
If left alone, someone new to the game wouldn't know it was wrong and take it for gospel.
I know its all well intentioned but then I feel I have to say something to stop someone getting totally confused.
I have seen guys in here who are right handed and talk about hitting a push straight left, someone else who doesnt know what is a weak grip is and someone else who thinks you can get overspin on a driver.
These are all little things that I dont bother correcting as I'm sure someone else can.
Its when someone talks with apparent authority and to a newbie sounds convincing, but gives bad advice that I get fed up.
I try and offer an alternative but get told in not so many words that I am wrong.
I dont think its necessary (sp ch) for me to put a P up on my posts, but if you guys want that, I'll change my signature. I dont want to appear arrogant now do I

I did mention shortly after is inception that "ask the experts" was exactly the opposite.

Very little expert oppinion and plenty of oppinion from anyone and everyone whether qualified to or not. Even me.

Not knocking anyone, just the way it has evolved.

Generally I give "ask the experts" a wide berth other than to keep an eye on it.

Have to agree with Medway as I expected so much more of this section. There is some good swing advice going about thanks to Bobmac etc but, rather naively, I thought that other experts (the odd low level tour pro, a club fitter or two, maybe the odd company rep) may be pointed in the direction of this section by GM to comment on forum enquiries.

This is the main reason I rarely offer pearls of wisdom with regard to other's swings and faults and problems etc. I havn't got a clue myself so there's no point in me telling someone else anything.

Also, trying to examine swings from middling to poor videos seems a bit daft to me. If Uncle Bob can see something then great - but I can barely see the club on most of them. This is a job for a pro, face to face.
