Hey, I'm pretty new to golf, but have been bitten by the bug already. I'm looking at my options for my first set of irons and would appreciate any opinions on the below 3 makes. Whether I buy new or used I'm after something good for a beginner, but which will still last me a couple of years:

Mizuno MX-19
Benross VX Combo OS
RAM Serbera

Any thoughts?

Cheers

Mizunos purely on the basis they will have some resale value, the others won't.

I tried the MX-19's when i went to buy some new clubs at AG. I did really like them and i have only been playing for a few months. Seemed quite forgiving. They were also dirt cheap in January.

Evening Phil, welcome to the forum.

I am a beginner also and i have a set of Mizuno MX-17s and they are spanking, cant recommend them highly enough. But i would strongly recommend getting your self to a shop and hitting some balls with as many different sets as physically possible! Go and have a time, i did and it was great fun. I even tried some Ping X20s which i simply couldnt afford but wanted to try.

Be careful though mate because its a slippy slope, next you'll think mmm i just need a new driver oh and a utility oh and putter...

I started with a full set of Ram V-Concept nearly 12 months ago, check the sig... very slippy slope

Purely on value for money I would go for Benross. Great budget irons with top quality shafts and grips.

I'd go with the Benross VX combo set.

Comes with 2 hybrids (v5?) and then 5-SW. All for £299

The Mizunos would be the choice set if you already have woods and a hybrid/rescue.

Alternatively (not that you were asking), you could look at a set of MD tungsten ti (or similar) and throw in an EQL 21 degree 3h to complement. Could be managed for about £200 if you can find the right places to buy.

Not keen on Ram......

Benross are great for the price but as stated, you will have better residual value on the Mizunos. Would also recommend having a go with Wilson Staff Di7s and, whilst I have not tried them myself, I am hearing some quite favourable comments on the new Nike Sumo irons.

I play with Nicklaus clubs.

You will get a second hand set of Nicklaus irons for £50 that cost £500+ new. they dont hold resell value but if you buy second hand you get the deal.

There are 3 grades of Jack Nicklaus clubs available.
Nicklaus=the top of the range
Jack Nicklaus= intermediate value clubs
Golden bear= there budget stuff

Go for Nicklaus of ebay as they are dirt cheap and dont be put off with the price, if you read any review of nicklaus clubs they are of excellent quality and playability they are just not a fashionable name as Taylor made, ping or callaway.

Also out of the budget clubs on the market ram are not to bad.
