It happened on Wednesday.

The sun was shining, I was enjoying paid time off work & had been invited to enjoy a free round in the company of family & friends at Carden Park, on the Nicklaus course....what could go wrong.

In a word EVERYTHING.

Having played most weekends this year I was making steady progress towards a solid swing and sensible decision making on the course. Imagine my surprise when I found I could not hit the ball in a straight line. Out of nowhere I was shanking the ball at 90 degree to where I was aiming. To my credit I was consistent and repeated this feat at leats 4 or 5 times.

I was horrified, my game fell a part and I battled my way to the 18th, smiling through gritted teeth and hoping my fellow players were not too distracted by my complete collapse.

I couldn't sleep that night.

Do I get back on the horse or have a couple of weeks down time to take stock and remember why I love this game.

Answers on a postcard please

I played in Cornwall the week-end before last. Much awaited get together with 6 of my mates. Had been playing really well, good steady golf on my run up to the trip.
Friday afternoon 5 points on the front 9.
Saturday morning 7 points on the front 9.
Couldn't hit toffee. My swing (if that's what you could call it) had totally deserted me. Shanks, tops, thins, fats...you name it, I was doing it.
Two back 9's of 21 points on Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning convinced me that the game is still in there somewhere. But 5 points on the first round front 9 did me in!

For a few weeks I had the s***ks and it was horrid, I had rounds where I lost 4 balls on one hole then just lifted. I was so frustrated - then suddenly it just clicked and I had a few rounds in low 80's.

Keep with it and commit to the shot - that was part of my problem anyhow.

It is so easy to loose your rythm playing a course you are not used to, trying to hard or thinking to much, relax don't think to much about it your next round will be much better.

Been there.

Would happily have sold my clubs after one round where I was beaten by 6 holes in a matchplay event. Next day I went out and won our Summer Meeting. It's a silly game we play, no two rounds are the same.

Played like that on the GM Meet at the Belfry on the first round on the PGA. For some reason I simply forgot how to hit a golf ball. Things were better the next day but still not totally right.

Yep, everytime I've played a round with other forum members!! :) :) :) I've gotten over it now and actually quite enjoy playing shite :D

...and I don't think I've played a 'forum round' where I haven't 3-putted the first green :p :p :p LOL

played like that on both days. driver would work, irons wouldn't then driver on strike, irons Ok or putter on strike.

get on your own course, or one you know well, go alone. take your time and just let the shots come. you'll hit some good, some bad but then it's what most of us do all the time.

I would say get back out there and put the bad play behind you.
At our captains weekend I had a horror start in the first round. Three balls OOB on the first tee and finished with a 12. Three balls in the pond off the tee on the 2nd to score 11. This put me 15 over after two holes to which my playing partners were surprised that I didnt walk off. Battled back to finish with a net 81 though I didnt manage to make the cut at 74 but was praised to come back in +5 after going out in +21.
My next couple of social rounds a couple of days later saw net 65 and 67 and most rounds since have ben no more than +3 net, so I found the best course of action for me was to get back out there and give it hell.

Re: Ever played so bad that you're scared to return?

I'm scared to return every time - one day I'll shoot a 90 and want to drive off a cliff.
It's all about what you can and can't do for your standard.
Eventually, as you get better, even the worst round will have some highlights.
That's golf. That's why we do it.

Re: Ever played so bad that you're scared to return?

Last year, I went through several months of hitting shots sideways. I couldn't play my second shots into some holes until nearby greens on my right had cleared. There was little point entering competitions and I wasn't getting any fun out of playing.
I am quite determined, however, and I stuck at it , had lessons to help the "things that cannot be named" and continued to pay out my losses to my playing partner each week. For me, golf is about the battle against the conditions and the course on the day. All I can do is my best. Even when I'm absolutely shocking - the next shot might be a cracker! I'm pleased I didn't take up bowls or something last year - because I've really enjoyed playing this season - have even won a couple of things and haven't hit a ***** all year.
