I don't think the team like Capello and find it difficult to be motivated by someone who speaks broken English. So if they get rid, that will cost them £15m as he signed a new contract prior to this debacle. It seems only Capello is facing the Mee-Ja at this afternoons conference. I think the team need someone like Hodgeson to stifle 6 or 7 big ego's in order to put the team first.

The FA (who are after all a bunch of amateurs, quite literally!) needs overhauled from top to bottom. Capello can only work with the players he has and the simple fact is that they don't compare to even the likes of Holland, which has only a third of England's population. Until young players are allowed to develop skills other than hoofing it up the pitch as far as they can, England might as well not bother.

Not trying to defend the awful performance yesterday but I think that a large part of it is down to the amount of games that the Premiership teams play. We did well in qualifying because a large number of games are played early on or in the middle of the season. By the time the actual tournament comes about the players are either knackered or carrying injuries that they have played through to help win the title etc. How many othe premiership players have done well at the world cup (those that made it with many having been injured in the build up). The only ones who have stood out are those that have been injured or do not play week in week out (Van Persie/Tevez). We are the only european league without a winter break and we are surprised when our players look lacklustre and sluggish having played solidly for nearly 11 months. If we want the football team to improve then there needs to be some form of enforced break like there is in Rugby and cricket.

I actually heard some sense on 5 Live from David Davies this morning. He agreed about the hype problem and in his opinion we either need to admit that international football means nothing when compared to club football and see any tournament success as a bonus or start building in breaks and putting in faclities to show a real intention in having a successful internation team.

Well I was disappointed when England beat Slovenia to get through to the last 16. Especially when their team performances were well below average for a team with such top quality Premier League players.
It was even better to see them totally outclassed and well and truly thrashed by Germany today. HAPPY DAYS!!!!!

WELL DONE GERMANY :D :D :D :D
Tosser!!!!! :(

The Germans were not that good ...... 4-1 was no reflection on the balance of the match.

However, whats done is done. Clearly everything is not good in the camp and Capello must take the blame for that. We were probably lucky not to go out in the group stage like Italy. My own feeling is that much of this began with the John Terry affair and the decision to take the captaincy off him must rank as one of the worst ever by an England manager.

I will take my selective quoting from the top...4-1 was not a reflection of the game it was closer to a reflection of the first half. Mr Hansen offered '5 or 6' but I am being generous.

Terry, I think, is a big problem within the team setup and should not only have lost his captaincy but also his place in the squad.

It was obvious he was making problems for the manager, undermining his authority, publicly, naming players to be picked thereby causing problems for the players then picked if they were not Terry's choice.

The manager at least put him in his place at the meeting but he should have put him on the plane back home for the sake of player unity.

Terry has no worries about coming home ...his position in the Chelsea team is still there, his hip pocket money is still not worrying him and he knows he has created a big problem for the manager he does not like. Politics that's for sure!!

Should one person be allowed to create this mischief within a camp??

Let's hope the powers that be share my view and take action.

You were let down by the actions of one man and that was not the manager but a small minded player prepared to stick two fingers up at the nation and he will now be back home with his little tail wagging!

Get hungry players who want to wear the shirt and show pride and passion whilst wearing it.

Get an English manager who believes in discipline in the same vein as Alf Ramsey. He treat the team of 66 like his own kids. He cared for them and looked after them. He also bollocked them when they stepped out of line.

Going from what I've seen of Capello, he comes across as a fairly strict and dare I say arrogant man. The prima donnas in the England side didn't like him. Period. To me, that's the reason why there was unrest in the England camp during the tournament.

Agree 100% well said.

Some of the comments are getting ott.

England 2nd div. world football nonesense, look at the facts
your as good as your world rankings its the same for golf.

Like him or not Harry Rednapp knows more about football than all of us on here, and when he says England have some good players i for one would agree with him.

Imo the problem lies with taking players that are to old and slow ie Terry, Carragher, Upson,Heskey and playing football that we were playing 30 years ago.How the hell can we compete on the world stage with players like this and a system that clearly is outdated in world football.

I am sure that Simon Cowell will do a TV show where you phone in and vote for who you want as manager. You know, I think the FA would sell the rights to that coz they have sold everything else thats not nailed down.

A large part might be down to players being tired but then i suppose you should be greatful they don't play in the championship. They were aveage at best. They only beat Japan 2-1 because Japan scored all goals and then went on to in one of three games in group stages. The problem with England is simple. The English expect to much. Making the players famous doesn't make them better.

Ok, a few days gone and time to add my bit.
watched the match at the golf club (after a decent(ish) round that finished at 3.10 (due to a bit of congestion and some poor etiquette shown by a former captain - no way was I going to be let through)).
first half was just about acceptable, not good but acceptable. imo James has to take a lot of the responsibility for the first goal, too hesitant - shall I go, no I won't, yes I will - I think if he had gone for the ball first time he would/could have got to it first.
the disallowed goal (revenge for 66?) seemed to sap any energy/spirit that there was consequently the second half was shockingly bad.

The majority of the squad seemed listless and just thrashing around blindly.

It does not make sense to me that you take your best (debatable) players, many of them unfit, and play them out of position in a formation that is the only one the manager seems to want or understand - he definitely had no Plan B.

how do you fix it? lots of arguments -

too many foreign players - possibly, it's something France wants FIFA to address, and Italy also suffer from it. A limit on the number of foreign players in a team is possible but it will send the price for those that do come soaring. and it does not guarantee a squad brimming with National talent.

technically poor - compared with many teams, undoubtedly. even simple basic skills like passing to somebody wearing the same coloured shirt seemed to desert them. and what happened to creating space by moving?

overpaid, lazy and lacking committment - there is an argument that the worst offenders are not those of Rio's and JT's generation but those of around 22 and 23. Got all the money don't need to do anything to get more. JT is an anachronism, he's just the last of the old school epitomised by Terry Butcher - pull the shirt on and die for it. The modern ethos is more 'hey chill man, I'm on the line to my broker.'

too many games - probably. we are I think the only league that doesn't take a break but the League would be reluctant to forgo the money and you need your top players to be competing in the Champions league. a National squad system as in cricket - I doubt the FA could afford it, even if the League accepted it.

too many foreign managers - don't think so, a good manager is a good manager though, as with players, buying in foreign talent cannot but weaken the domestic pool. difficult to fix this one. the National team should be managed by a National if you have one. The National team is an FA responsibility, League teams pay lip service to the FA. Ideally the FA needs to train managers but where and how? appointing Psycho as understudy to Capello may not have paid off.

If you look at the premiership and many people have said its the best league in the world[not in my eyes but probably the most entertaining]and then take the foriegn players that come over and people say thats the reason younger players are not getting the chance to play,i disagree to an extent because if your good enough you will get your opportunity. At this world cup we had world class players,John terry and Frank lampard are consistently the best players at chelsea even with all the foriegn players,Gerrard the same at Liverpool hes the best almost every week and if he doesnt perform nor do Liverpool,Rooney simply the best player at Utd and probably 3rd or 4th best player in the world. We had the players to win this world cup but none of then performed to the best of their ability,Imo there is a more underlying problem whether its tiredness, the system or the management. As golfers we know that when all else fails and you cant put your finger on the problem get back to basics thats where England need to go and start afresh.

We will never develop the skills early enough as long as we make 11 year olds play on a full sized pitch. Kick and chase? It's the only flippin option.Jonny foreigner is honing his skills on the streets, in confined spaces, while English kids are marooned on a massive field, with Dad shouting get stuck in lad, and hoof it at the striker, while every one else swears at the ref.

Back to basics anyone?

All the slagging always come from The scots!!! Remind me when was the last time u qualified!!!!

Now I am a Scot ..and proud of it..and if you read my offering regarding the English team you may find it constructive reading.

Sack Terry..end of!

He is disruptive unless he gets his own way. The Nation does not matter..John Terry does...in his mind!

'Toys and pram' come to mind.

Now re the Scots, I take it that when England did not qualify you were not entitled to an opinion because you are English.

I can imagine you at a golf club meeting, when someone is proposing a change to the club parking arrangements...."you did not win a trophy so your opinion is of no relevance"!

Grow up!

You are our larger neighbour and we have to accept that but get that silly mentality about the Scots out of your head, just because your football team and tennis players, are crap!!
