hc went from 2.4 to an embarrassing 3.7 can't remeber the last time I played off 4, now back to 2.8.
Won The Lindrick Open 4bbb
won Club Championship
played Alwoodly for the 1st time in a mixed comp and came 5th.
Just back to golf after a 16 year hiatus. Never touched a club or looked at my bag. Then got back into things in January this year through my boss needing a body to play in a company competition. I shot 95 and won nearest the pin!
Other highlights:
- Played the Queens Course at Gleneagles. Loved every minute.
- Played Newburgh on Ythan in Aberdeenshire in another company golf day. Played rubbish but won a new Nike Carry bag in the raffle
- Played Murcar Links in October. Scored 37 Stableford points (24 Handicap given) in another company golf day. Finished second and won a bottle of Jura with nearest the pin
- Played Forfar Golf Course and loved it. Didn't play great but was another enjoyable day out.
- Managed to stick to my 2 or 3 trips a week to the range to keep me swinging! the enjoyment never waivered
2015 Objectives
- Join a club (hoping Forfar)
- Get custom fitted for new sticks. My clubs are old and I swing a bit faster than I did at 16.
- Get my handicap
- Keep enjoying playing
I play that much golf that it’s hard to sum it up. Still playing off 5 so happy with that especially from around 35 or so medal rounds. Won the summer foursomes for the fourth time in 40 years. Won a medal at Dunbar and a couple of runner ups. Got into a couple of singles finals but got emptied.
In saying all that, in an open comp I just missed the scratch prize after a par round, missing out on count back to the Lothians champion who's forty years younger than me, ..three putted 16 as well.
The most satisfying round was at Dunbar GC. After an awful first nine of 44 shots I wanted to quit, but you’re at the furthest end of the course. I shot a one under 34 on the back nine....with three bogies in that 34.
I also shot off the whites, a 2 under 68 around Royal Musselburgh, but I don’t count that as it wasn’t in competition. Also at Royal Musselburgh, in a medal, I shot a seven over 77 with a nine on my card......parrot...sick.
Arnold started the year by being a lazy indolent boy who should have been doing better, by the early spring the sap had failed to rise and he clearly was not achieving his potential, external factors were causing him anxiety and he was displaying this on the golf course. A series of detentions followed but this failed to correct the problem, as much as he would have wanted it a sound spanking was not permissible so with great regret Arnold was excluded for the summer term.
After such a lengthy break away from his chums Arnold's behaviour I am pleased to say has improved dramatically, in class he is still not achieving but I am heartened by his change to his peers and his acceptance of his lot.
I hope that 2015 will bring him the improvement he seeks now that he understands it's only a game and he will never be in the A stream with the younger boys.
If this was a school report it would probably say something like;
"Michael showed a lot of promise but failed to live up to expectations. He often spoilt good work through carelessness and lack of thought., Could do better: C-"
"Sp-C has enjoyed his golf this year particularly team events. This is quite the reversal of previous years when he maintained a self imposed distance from team competitions. Good to see. Overall performance has been good with two medals won and a minor cup - didn't show well enough in the big events however. This is only a matter of slight inconsistency so little to worry about.
"A good attitude on the course has been maintained throughout despite frustrations with an ailing physique. Keep up the gym work and yoga to keep some semblance of order. Next years challenge remains continual improvement of the short game and managing distance control with the wedges which has been at best, lousy".
My handicap went up by 0.2 this year but managed to stay at 5, which may not be an improvement, but I do have to be playing resonably well (for me) to stay there. I played well for 16/17 holes on a number of occasions, but often had a blow up hole too many! I don't think I played a medal without a Double Bogey
Shot my best medal score of +1. That included a lost ball for a DB and a penalty drop at the last.
My game felt far better than it was last season, driving and putting both better, chipping still good.
Long Mid irons were a big let down, not sure where it all went wrong. Work to be done.
I never performed particularly well in my match play events, not well at all. If I played them against the course rather than the man, I would do a hell of a lot better.
I added Western Gailes, Archerfield and the Kings at Gleneagle to my courses played.
Have gone from 16.4 to 11.0 over the course of the season, which exceeds my target of 12. However it was all done early doors and marred a little by the performance in the last few comps where I had 4 0.1's in a row before sneaking into buffer in the last medal of the year.
I won a medal getting into the Lombard trophy SW comp at Burnham, which was cool but I didn't play well at b&b
I've recently been a lot more comfortable off my new lower handicap and have shot under it a few times so there is room for improvement in the spring.
I've chopped and changed my clubs a lot this year after starting well by going 6 months without buying anything. At one point I had a different driver in the bag from my "stable" each round. I have seen sense now and sold everything other than what is in my bag plus a couple of alternative options (5w and 2iron) so with fewer distractions I hope to kick on next year.
B- Steady at the start of the season, followed by big strides coinciding with a purchase of decent irons and some monetary success in outings. Felt like it's moved backwards these past 8 weeks or so but then I haven't put the practice in with the basics, fully intend to come up with a more focused practice plan (particularly putting) with the initial aim to get the h/cap under 12. So, good season, but plenty to work on.
Played some great golf this year and got to a big final which sees me going to the UAE in Feb. Without that would be C. I hammered the gym the first 4 months of the year and as a result hitting ball further and more consistently, but an injury mid summer where I was out for 7 weeks meant my handicap didn't come down as much as I'd have hope and my best placing in a club comp was 4th, so didn't make any club finals. Next year is a fresh leaf. The short game I've struggled with will be worked on extensively as I make a push for single figures.
Very promising interspersed with flashes of extreme mediocrity/garbage.
Handicap down but could have been so much better if I weren't such a tinkerer. Having said that, if I weren't a tinkerer I'd probably still be where I was 4 years ago.
It's not far off being very good imo. Sometime next year it will click, then watch out!!
Handicap increased from 11.4 to 11.7 so moved the wrong way and too many good rounds spoilt by one careless hole ruining a chance to win or hit a buffer zone. Short game still hit or miss but some improvement in terms of ball striking. The big plus was the clean mind I now have playing courtesy of NGT which allows me to focus on one shot at a time and not focus on negativity and doubt when I do play a bad shot or hole.
I still have unswerving belief that I'm very close to posting some good scores getting cut and reaching my goal of single figures and I'll keep ploughing my own furrow to get there
A+
Started the year on 26 and down to 20.9 today! All areas of my game have improved helped by regular coaching and playing other courses coupled with senior matches.
