Just pondering in the bath this morning what my earliest memory is of a sports event (not including winning the egg and spoon race when I was 6 :D ).

Although I have vague memories of dad watching West Brom beat Everton in the FA cup final in 1968 (I remember he said one of the teams was called the "Toffees" which as a little kid I thought was hilarious). However my first real conscious memory is the 1968 Olympics when David Hemery won gold in the 400m hurdles.

My first golf memory is Jack winning the Open at St Andrews in 1970 which really helped get me hooked on golf. Shame that I can't remember Jacklin's win in 1969.

Wonder what other people can recall?

First footy memory was Archie Gemmils goal in the '78 world cup and instant heartbreak when we failed to go through.

Golf ??

Wasn't really into golf but watched Jack win his last Masters in '84 ish.

First real Footy memory was the 1970 World Cup. Brazil - the best team ever - forcing "that" save from Banks.
But the real memory was losing to bloody Germany with Gerd Muller scoring the winner. I was 7 and sat on the end of my bed crying my eyes out!
First real Golf memory - that's a toughy! Vague memories from the 70's but I wasn't into Golf so nothng concrete. Probably Faldo's holed chip (St Andrews?) in the Open - whichever year that was....

'66 world cup final.....then my dad taking me to the Huddersfield Town matches....huge crowds....50-65,000... rattles, scarves, jumpers for goalposts... :D

All the kids used to get passed down to the front over everyones heads so we could see....

Leatherhead beating Walton & Hersham 2-0 in 1971. First game I ever went to.

Golf - never really watched it but still remember my first par (Tyrells Wood 9th), birdie (Leatherhead 18th), eagle (Dorking 5th) and albatross (Sunbury Academy 5th).

I remember going to watch Leftie win a Seniors matchplay final at Sundridge Park, must have been around 1965.
I was only a tiddler, my Dad had to sit me on his shoulders.

Standing on the terrace at Leeds Road watching Huddersfield Town playing in the old 1st Division. Asking to sit on my dad's shoulders cos I couldn't see. Aaahh, the nostalgic scent of cigarette smoke wafting down the terrace.
Watching Town play Man Utd at Old Trafford around 1970. Again, sitting on my dads shoulders to see. (standing in those days) I'd never seen so many people gathered in a single area before, quite frightening for a young snapper.

Very vague memory of Peter Oosterhuis playing (not really interested in golf in those days..... old mans game!

Wasn't it the same year you sold your first car, light blue Anglia i think you told me. ;)

That was while I was walking down the 17th the other week wasn't it?
Sorry mate, I'm afraid you mis-heard me.
I said "You are a right true wanker"...but I can understand your confusion because you were in the trees at the time.
:D

My brother taking me to Hampden Park in 1973 to see Scotland beat Czechoslovakia and qualify for the 74 World Cup Finals. I had never been in such a cauldron of noise and when they scored it was mental - 'good mental'.

I don't see much of him nowadays but that night will be forever etched in my memory.

As an ex Chief in the Fleet Air Arm I knew quite a few guys who did the Field Gun - they even had their own groupies while at Earls Court - 'Gunny Bunny's'

I could never quite make up my mind if they were just hard or had no realisation what danger was. Some of the injuries they came back with were horrific. I just know I was too much of a wimp to even consider it.

I can vaguely remember the aftermath of Celtic's European Cup win in '67. Several of my class mates thought about changing their team to Celtic..... turncoats ;)

After that it would be the World Cup in 1970.

Golfwise, first I can remember watching was Trevino's win at Muirfield in 1972. That's the one that really got me started in golf.

First real Footy memory was the 1970 World Cup. Brazil - the best team ever - forcing "that" save from Banks.

I beg to differ Little Fat Bro

A couple of months earlier Your "Then" team Chelski faced "My Team" Leeds in the FA Cup Final,

OK Your team won the Replay,

Hope this jogs your addled brain cell :D :D
