So you're happy that he drops his head 6 inches on the backswing?
Why should I be. It's not the head that drops, it's a lowering of the body that the head will follow. Dropping in the backswing allows you to extend again up to the top, the reverse should happen in the downswing and follow through, a dropping so you can use the ground to push up in a spiral motion that increases club speed.

Take a look at the best golfers in the world and see how they use these forces to make great impact conditions. The Op's fat and thin strikes don't occur in his backswing they are most likely a result of his lack of correct weight shift. He doesn't need a drill he needs to understand the right and most efficient way to create good impact conditions.

So is there a drill?
Your post 'Try and keep the angle of your pelvis the same throughout the backswing ' seems more of a 'goal', unlike the one using the plastic chair to solve a slide that has obvious feedback.

Requires two people but what worked for me at a lesson was the pro standing in front of me and holding a club out that rested on top of my head.

A powerful golf swing will use the ground to create speed. This will mean extending in the backswing, dropping in the downswing then extending again as you go through impact into the follow through. You won't be lifting your head only, it will be your torso and legs and the fault will be doing it too early (early extension).

There will be a reason you are lifting early, your brain knows that you are going to hit the ground behind the ball and will be making you rescue this by standing up. Work on dropping down in the downswing and then pushing up from the ground and you strike the ball.

I'd say this is exactly what's causing my problem, the dipping...... My head never returns to exactly the same place.

Update on my swing: After changing coach's, and having a lesson at The Belfry, it appears my setup was wrong. I was standing with the club too far in front of me (Arms weren't hanging straight down at address), this seemed to be knocking me off balance in my backswing and causing my head to dip. Changed my address position and all seems to be a lot better now!

More consistent strikes, just need to engrain an in to out path now!
