Drivers - has the promise of extra distance ever been true?

I've just gained about 25m on driver in the last month

Didn't change it, just got a better swing (cheers for the tip Mr Finch)

This. I would guess that most golfers could realistically gain 15+ yards simply with better launch conditions - hitting up on the ball, hitting the centre of the face, etc.

The driver is all marketing hyperbole nowadays.

I wonder do any of the manufacturers actually employ any angineers, or are they just staffed by graphic designers and marketing people ?

PWR-COR Technology
Straight Flight Technology
Twist Face Technology
Flash Face Technology
AI Technology
Hi-Bore Crown Technology
Wave Sole Technology...
Adjustable Sole Plate Technology (so copied and now a fixture in all designs...). It was a plate and a screw....

Never in the field of human sport, has so little technology so overused the word technology.
Club manufacturers are only partly to blame - driver hos bear the remainder of the responsibility for lapping up the nonsense.

Your forgot Ping and their turbulators

My TM M2 driver has been all over the place lately.
As an experiment, I made an eBay purchase last week. A golf shop has what is probably "new old stock" Dynamic Gold S300 steel driver shafts - pretty obsolete golf tech. I bought a 43" shaft with a TM adaptor and fitted to my M2 head.
I've only hit about 30 balls at a range with a launch monitor. They were much straighter, slightly less carry than normal but rolled out further then I ever normally drive a ball.
I'm not sure what that shows. Any thoughts?

Just upgraded from the M2 (reg shaft, 10.5 degrees) to the SIM2 (stiff shaft, 9 degrees)

Ive gained 18 yards in carry - and on the course, the difference is phenominal.

The shaft and loft adjustment will make some difference but still, significant gain of yardage.

I play a Titleist 910D, 10.5, senior flex and on a good day make 200 yds. Had a fitting Wednesday and tried quite a lot of new stuff - g425 Max, Stealth, SiM2Max and Radspeed Max. To my surprise and disappointment none went any further. The fitter waived the fee! He suggested that if I got used to the 425 and the M2 I would probably see some benefit. He knows my pro so he offered to lend me the those two so that I could try on the course. Took them out yesterday and didn't get on with the Ping. The SIM2 went well but still comparable with the old stick. When I middle the 910, I can really feel and hear it. The new stuff feels a bit dead and dull sounding on impact. Is this a function of the better forgiveness across the face? Should I save my dosh and just carry on with the 910? I reluctantly realise that the logical answer should be yes.

I went from a 910 to a SIM. Not noticed any distance gains, but it’s definitely more forgiving on off centre hits.
At first it felt a bit dead off the face, but I think that is down to the sound which is more of a thud compared to the ping of the 910. It only took me a couple of rounds to get used to it, I actually really like the sound and feel now. It feels powerful (I know that is just a “feeling” and not real).
