i am looking at getting a new driver and have booked a fitting for the 22nd and have been looking at a few i might have a try with before i go to have an idea and in particular the callaway razr fit seems mad money! and after the currency exchange it is even more expensive in the uk than where i am in ireland. how do they think what works out as just under 400 euro is a fair price for a driver? curious to see peoples opinions thanks

I went for a Callaway fitting and the fitter could not get my spin down, in the end he found a shaft that got it just right.... £449 he wanted.... Mad man!

As said before in other post regarding beginners with top of the range gear , if you can afford it & you want it then its not mad .. if something else has to go amiss to pay for it then it is lunacy & forget it .. only you know the answer mate ..

Where abouts you looking at it ?

I am going to this fitting willing to spend maybe 350 euro max which is more than reasonable for any driver i think but only if i see a significant difference between that and a cheaper model

You don't need to spend 350/400 in a driver. There will be plenty of previous models that stack up closely to the current stock at alot less money, that and there's plenty of new models on the market at 200-250.

I was thinking about the cost of clubs and I remember my first full set, it cost me £85 on special offer may back in the early 70s, it was round about twice my weekly wage, going off my weekly wage before I retired my new set were as cheap as chips in comparision.

I bought a brand new Callaway driver a couple of years ago for under £80. Cheap simply because it was a 2 year old model. Funnily enough it still worked perfecly. No moving parts to go rusty or get seized up.;)

Can't really see the point of spending £300+ on a driver that'll still work just as well in a year's time when it's half the price.

I have to say I baulk at paying that much for any make or model. I simply do not drive the ball well enough (irrespective of the C/F v non C/F argument) and until I can correct the overswing and excessive movement with the long stick then money on lessons and trying to get it in play is by far the better value for money.

Of course that's just me. If you are getting fitted, and even if you aren't and you think the £300+ driver is the stick for you then crack on. We're all individuals and all have our own take on the best approach which makes here and the game itself so great

As he is getting a custom fit they will not recommend a previous model and he would have to be very lucky if his fitting stats recommend for a lower range costing driver but you never know ;)

Go and see a proper club fitter and you'll be fitted properly. No point in going for a Callaway with a crap selection of stock options. Money wasted in my opinion!

I've recently bought a Cobra S2 driver off of ebay. It was used, but you could hardly tell it from brand new. £85.00 delivered and after using it for the last two rounds it's staying in the bag. Absolutely love it. I would never spend that amount of money on a driver. I'd wait 6 months or so and pick one up off the bay used.

Must admit the cost of new clubs can be very high. Being a tight wad myself. I only buy last years models. If you look at my signature, you will see a reasonably good bag. But the cost was a fraction the current costs. None of the woods cost more than £95, the irons £250 and the wedges and putter around £40. All new no secondhand.
