Does anyone ever attempt this?
Personally i can't see the point.
Way too high risk & does it actually go any further than a 3w?

Hit one into our 9th the other day. Playing into the wind and ball was sat up nicely in the light rough, I didnt have a 3 wood with me and wouldnt have got there with hybrid. Knocked it on the front edge :) Not the highest percentage shot but odd occasion it seems an ok play

A friend of mine and Merv79 is pretty handy at this shot but not one I'd be tempted to try unless there was a LOT of cut grass out to the right.

Show off 😜
Would you have still hit driver if you had a 3w in the bag?

I used to know someone that in winter would do it often using preferred lies to tee up his ball slightly on a bit of grass on the fairway (within 6 inches of his ball ofc) hit a nice sweet shot with it aswell

Sorry but that doesn't count 😜

I do when playing into a strong wind. I did used to hit the smaller headed drivers from the tee box without a tee, as I just couldn't hit a teed up ball. Driver off the deck almost impossible to hook, so goes straight-fade. Needs a good lie, and a slight upslope is best. Need to sweep the ball with a nice wide swing. A thinned one runs nicely.;)

I must be one of the few people that don't mind this shot although I normally only use it into strong wind as 3 wood is fine under normal circumstances.

Actually think it is low risk as long as you don't top it. Even poor strikes will normally advance min 150 along the deck.

It's a great shot if you can do it
Its very hard to get the ball in the air as with the size of the heads now you can only get it off the bottom of the face .
I will play it if I have a very good lie and nothing in the way as was stated a thin one can go a long way.
Its a high risk of topping though so not really recommend.

I've seen a member (senior) I play with at times use his driver at times from the first cut with great results, especially if it's got to work around or between any trees or obstruction, he sweeps it away brilliant, it stays low and runs on to great distances that wouldn't have been achieved had he tried to use an iron. I tried it once when I was with him and it's a great thing to have in the armoury if you can master it.

A PP of mine today knobbed his drive 50 yd today, pIck and place teed his ball up and promptly knobbed it another 30 yd on our par five 530 yd. last half of his spine on that hole. God how I laughed.
