You are playing an unfamilar course. Today I was playing an approach to the 16th green, is it 6 or a 7 iron? well there is a bank and trees at the back so better to be short than long. I play the 7 its a tad short but not too much just a simple chip or pitch and run. I walk up towards the green and..... where the heck did that stream come from!!!

That's what course planners are for :D

Yellow stakes! there were some around a patch of rough ground on the first hole, I thought it denoted GUR!!!!
Hahaha
yellow stakes - water in front of u
red stakes - lateral water
GUR - usually written onto the grass with spray paint and the area ringed ;)

You'll get there :D

One of the biggest arguments for a GPS I'm afraind. That or a course planner. Some holes have the layout shown on the tee box or a map on the back of the card. I'm afraid its trial and error. There was a couple in my group at Camberley unaware of a lake on 16

This is why I think that some form of scoresaver should come free with your green fee. Does not have to have the high production values that some that you can buy have, just a simple course layout with some basic yardages. It may even help speed up play but would certainly make every guest's round a bit more enjoyable.

It used to be a feature on most score cards, a basic map for each hole. Hardly see it any more. Probably another cost cutting measure.

our score cards have all 18s holes marked on there with yardages to hazards and also the green lengths etc where as the old club had nothing of the sort think im just spoilt

I like having the scoresaver as has a wee bit more info than a gps e.g. best side etc. They are only a few quid and I take it each time I go back, and like looking at them for the memory. Nae excuse for goiNg in the burn.

I think you get them free with more expensive courses.

Yes Heaton park near me is only a Muni(damn good one though). Has a 5 page score card with a hole by hole, detailed map on it. If a muni can do well what more can I say!

I have looked at the website of the place I played and there is a hole by hole guide with yardages, should have looked and printed it off before I went.

Did the burn only show up on the one hole? Normally they are meandering so and so's that get in the way...
