Enhanceing the game is not all about scores there has to be a point were you have to enjoy what you are doing and take pride in your ability and the time you have put into something - I just feel we are starting down a road where we are making the game to easy and we will come to a point were people will pick up clubs for the first time and shot level par and if something is that easy what is the point in doing it

I can't see how golf is ever going to be too easy. With all the modern advances in ball technology and club technology, I have played off 12 for nigh on 20 years. If the game is getting easier, I am getting worse.

I think you are judging this from a very good players perspective, which 99% of golfers will never achieve. At more mundane golfing levels, hitting a 1i is more akin to purgatory, and is a skill that can never be mastered.

I can't see a point at any time soon when a rank beginner will be able to break 100, let alone shot level par.

I have never heard so much crap from a newbie before.I take it you play with old blades, persimmons, balata balls, your irons stop at the old 52degree sand iron and an original ping anser putter then and each time you middle your 460cc driver you get pangs of guilt come over you eh?

I am sure you are fishing for a wind up here. Is Tiger's 5 wood puffy enough for you.

Your beloved Mp32s aren't exactly a purists dream now are they??

"The Cut Muscle design allowed Mizuno's engineers to create a more forgiving weight distribution without affecting the MP-32's profile above the ball"

Isn't this the exact same sort of technology you are criticising??

I am still not sure why, of all the technology available, you are singling out hybrids? They have been here for ever, and tbh, don't affect scoring half as much as the ball technology.

Now bring up broomstick putters, and we are talking.

Do you not feel that there is no point to them ? there is no skill needed ?

I don't know how many of you have seen the interveiw with Jack Nicklaus were he talks about his favorite shots - almost all are 1 iron shots, we are going to loose this I can't imagine tiger once he has retired describing a puffy floaty hybrid shot as being the best of his career

I don't think hybrids were really around when Mr Nicklaus was hitting 1 irons.

I presume you are hitting a Mashie a scooper and a putter or whatever clubs used to be called?

Or maybe you've gone real hardcore and are using a crook like those sheperds all those years ago?

More likely you'll have some irons using modern technology like weight distribution

Of course their is skill needed, give one to someone who has no idea how to swing a club and I doubt they'll hit it anywhere near as good as the average golfer can.

Every single club in your bag has benefited from modern technology simple as.

Oh and if I'm a muppet for using hybrids what are you for kidding yourself you are some kind of golfing purist?

The thing that irkes me about this thread is not the fact that you dissagree with hybrids, but it's the fact that you think we are all muppets for not having the same view as you.

freddie, hats off to you +3, i can only dream. i am 9.3, never had a lesson, i know its wrong but i just go out and play. biggest iron i use is a 6, 4 & 5 rescues and 5 wood. i wish i could use bigger irons, and do take them out occasionally, but not good with them, and to be honest i am too old to spend hours on the range. call me a muppet, been called a lot worse over the years. use what you like, when you like, where you like, its your call. its a sport, use what makes you enjoy the game. i play for enjoyment. in a comp i would rather play well and loose then play bad and win. lighten up and enjoy this wonderful sport. life is too short and there is too much golf left too play.

Oddly, I was practicing with my hybrid just last night. Playing off +3, maybe you can hit one very easily, but for me, off 11, I have to work at it, like all my clubs. If I neglect them, they let me down.

My hybrid allows me to hit 185 yards, and without it, I have a yardage gap. If I was to fill it with a 7 wood, would that suit your eye better? Personally, I can't see the difference. 7 woods have been around for ages too. Still looks like a hybrid (the difference is eroding radidly, just look at the Fybrid range).

Ok, Nicklaus didn't use one then, but I bet he does now. He certainly endorses them in AG.

This technology is here, and it will remain. That is just the way it is. No good moaning about it, just because you can nail a 1i, and I can't.

I would still argue that they are nothing new.

To add fuel to the fire, I think hybrids ARE hard to hit.
I can hit my 4 iron fairly sweetly, and next up is my 5 wood then 3 wood to play off the deck, lie permitting.
I had a rescue club with my first set of clubs, and to this day I can't hit it properly.
I've a fancy to get a 3 iron because of my lack of ability with the rescue- maybe It's just me?
Oh, the original poster is winding up.
He never did answer on the 460° driver...

Possibly but there has to be a reason to practice - it should not be a case of buying a different club and all of a sudden you are a better golfer

So you want me to stop working 40-50 hours a week and run off to the golf course 3 or 4 nights a midweek to practice whilst HID happily goes along with it... day dreamer...

I am lucky to get two rounds or days of practice on a weekend, mostly its Saturday and sunday if I am lucky or one day playing and the other early morning practice and home for breakfast.
