Just been reading GM and the Luke Donald feature / tips etc.

I realised that while I know total distance my clubs go I have no firm idea what the carry for each is.

I have a better feel for the short irons and wedges of course but not a clue when it comes to the long irons and woods.

So....do you know your carry for each?

I have enough to think about with total distance.
Then factor in wind, temperature drop, soft conditions a couple of swing thoughts and bam a scuff up the fairway.

Next season, i'm learning to free my mind :p

haha, nice one.

I do to an extent as it doesnt really allow for my inconsistent swing. pw 110-120, 9 iron 130, 8 iron 140, 7 iron 150, 6 iron 160, 5 iron topped or duffed 30 yards

Vaguely. Its a bit subjective without flash monitors but I would say +/- 10 yards I'm fairly certain of carry distance and having spent some time measuring average distances when I got my clubs I'm fairly confident I know how far I can hit each one

I have numbers I work on when figuring what club to use, but with inconsistent hits and different wind conditions and temperatures I'm never quite sure if I'm right or not.

Obviously it works for you, but I don't think I could work on total distance as the roll has to be even more variable than the carry doesn't it?

You carry 130/140/150/160 yards with 9/8/7/6 irons?

With the dry conditions this year, that would mean a minimum of, say, 180 yards with a 6 iron. Still off 28?

I stand at the ball look at the flag and say to myself thats a 6 iron, wedge, 9 iron or whatever take out the club and wack the ball. Ok the direction is often way off but usually the distance is in the ballpark. How far do I hit a 9 iron? Haven't got a clue and anyway does it matter? :-)

yes rosecott, I parred 3 out of 1st 4 yesterday, then went single, single,. quad, triple :(

my irons are decent, its off the tee I suck :(

What I was suggesting was that very few of us can know how much we carry with any particular club unless it pitches and stops immediately. GPS can tell us how far the ball might have travelled but not how far the carry was.

or round my course, it's the lakes that tell you whether you carry as far as you think you do

Very few of us need to be that accurate though! If my skycaddie says its 175 to the centre of the green thats good enough for me. I know a 5 iron will on average for me travel 175. If its over water and I'm worried about the carry/hazard I'll go with a smooth 4 iron. I don't play golf for a living so knowing I carry a 4 iron 178.4 yards is irrelevant too me to be perfectly honest.

I have spent time both on the course and practice area with the skycaddie working out my distances, thats good enough for me.

For me Total distance and Total carry are the same thing up to a 6iron or so.
After that, my main concern is hitting the green or playing to a safe part of the green. ie avoiding bunkers or hazards.
I then only worry about total carry if i need to clear a ditch etc then i will either club up or play short and safe.

my yardages were a rough guesstimate but what I use as general rule of thumb, sometimes I can come up short or slightly long, depending on conditions and whether I hit it absolutely sweet as a nut. as stated by most its knowing roughly which club 'should' get you there for distance.

If mine were exact and achievable every shot I wouldnt be on here, I would be having a siesta for my practice round tomorrow before the portuguese open :p

I work on the assumption that 5-PW then my carry is also the total distance (unless the course is bone dry), anything more than 220 and its a 2 iron and then a quick fingers crossed for a decent roll. Of course this is assuming a good shot. Its all pointless if I stick another ball in the trees on the right.

You can't know "total distance" on any shot unless it stops dead. Just say you carry your 5 iron 170 yards - what then..? The ball hits the deck and you're in the lap of the Gods. Take a kick off a downslope and you've gone another 30 yards. Hit the upslope and you'll get 5 more if you're lucky. You can do little to control what happens to the ball once it's hit the ground so total distance cannot be known.
Whilst playing you may get a feel for how far the ball runs, or not, but it's still a lottery to an extent.
Know your carry distances and you will have more chance.

+/- 5 yds yeah but we're just getting to the time of year where I need to get out on the practice ground and check them out again. I like re-check this time of year as it is more important since you don't get any run.

I look at a shot from 150 and think
"I used to hit a 7 from here but it's a 6 with these old clubs, also it's the back 9 so getting tired so an easy 5 and I'm getting old, 4 it is then, but it's getting colder in the air so a solid 3 should suffice"

Then I go and Smiffy it into a bunker ;)

Dont agree...you can see where your ball is landing, thats the carry, it doesnt need to stop. Driving range, practice area will have markers. You can even go to the pro and go on the machine and that will tell you the carry. Carry is more important than where it ends up.
